TDM 008

content warnings for this TDM include: gambling references, mild horror themes and suggestive content

⏵ arrival⏴

Arrival does not happen as Aurora usually plans for it. Newcomers generally find themselves waking up within the hospital, are given a brief overview of their situation, and sent on their way. Now? They wake up immersed in a game within The Gold Saucer. But it doesn't quite feel like a game: whether it's snowy mountains, riding a chocobo as you listened to the wind quickly pass by your ears, or in the middle of a battle with a beast, it feels utterly real.

It's only after the game concludes - either by winning or losing - that you find yourself back in the main game area. A bot, dressed as personnel in this lavish playground, approaches each arrival with an earpiece allowing them to communicate with those in their same situation. It also serves to inform them of their goal: collect enough gold saucer points (or GP) by playing the games to acquire a card fashioned to their own likeness from the game counter. Then, they must trade it for someone else's. Seems simple enough, right? Hopefully the cards aren't too expensive...

⏵ the gold saucer ⏴

The Gold Saucer is an ode to the very idea of fun. It’s huge, labyrinthine, colorful, and lively. Everywhere you look, there’s something to do. At the same time, it’s also impossible to tell what time it is. There are no windows to the outside, there are no clocks. This place is beyond such a thing.

There are games everywhere you look, ranging from the pseudo-gambling to sports to pixelated video games in cabinets. Yet no matter which boxing game, pinball machine, or skeeball machine you look at, the same creatures and themes arrive. Cactuars, chocobos, the fiercest Behemoth, the cuddliest Moogle… For those from the realms of Final Fantasy, this will feel natural- homey even. Everyone else will simply understand that there is a fairly strong central theme here about magic, machines, and monsters.

It’s hard to tell how long you spend here, and it seems to sit outside of the very concept of time. Still, there are many restaurants, lounges, and vending machines. There are shops and costume rentals. There are even little pharmacies with headache remedies if the partying gets out of hand. And when you grow tired, there is a hotel- though it is made up like a haunted house, you can count on getting some semi-restful sleep.

⏵ playtime ⏴
Interdimensional Games

At first, stepping through to play any of these games may make participants wonder if they have been teleported somewhere else entirely. But on closer inspection, all the skies above are merely well-constructed interiors with painted ceilings. After all, it always seems to be daytime during these games.

Snowboarding - Race to the bottom of the mountain, but avoid obstacles and complete as many tricks as possible!

Chocobo Racing- Race on Chocobo-back around a treacherous outdoors race track which can either be taking place in a desert, a swampy forest, or upon an island beach. Work in tandem with your rented bird and against your competition by throwing hazards in their way or utilizing buffs garnered on the track. Different colored birds will yield different advantages.

Yellow - Good All Rounder
Red - Fast, but hard to steer
Blue - Slower, but very easy to steer. Much easier to pick up items from them.
Green- Resilient against traps and sabotage

Colosseum Battle- Face off against the fiercest beasts around. Pair up with friends or rivals to Collaborate or Compete to do the most damage and deliver the final blow. These battles are synced to the comparative power of the one entering the competition.

We wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt unnecessarily, after all. And indeed, no one will get seriously, gruesomely, or permanently injured in these battles. Those without fighting capabilities can rent weapons outfitted Materia to assist them in their trial. These will allow anyone to cast spells, though not guarantee any better wielding of weapons. There are a hundred rounds, starting with fairly simple Spriggans, ranging all the way up to blood-thirsty Behemoths to challenge even the most battle-hardened hero.

Gold Saucer Games

Leap of Faith- Players are presented with an obstacle course that stretches a hundred feet into the air upon floating platforms and islands. Both are held aloft by magical crystals. Powers are entirely nerfed, though falling and hitting the ground is strangely painless. Those who collect the most silver and gold statuettes of cactuars placed at random throughout the course will be awarded proportionate GP; though there is a bonus for those that reach the very top first.

Triple Triad- Everywhere you look, people are playing this game on little 3 by 3 boards, or any surface with enough space. You will be given a loaner deck to play with. Are you clever enough to defeat your fellows.

Fashion Report- Theobold, familiar to some, stands by himself in a little booth with a dressing room and an incredibly expansive walk-in closet. He is a robot of distinguished fashion and strong opinions on those fashions. Do you dare subject yourself to his scrutiny? Come prepare in his wondrous closets to make the best outfit for the chance to win a prize. Please submit your fashion here!

There are Arcade Machines and activities galore. If you can think of it, it’s probably there- Just with that Final Fantasy pastiche on it, of course.

⏵ the beehive lounge ⏴

There are other places to eat at the Gold Saucer, but the vending machines and cafés all pale in comparison to the dinners at the Beehive.

For all the rave reviews, there is a dress code at the Beehive, and this is literal. If you step inside and are not currently wearing a dress, you will be ushered into a sideroom and appropriately made over.

However, this is only for those trying to go in through the normal doors. Around the side there happens to be an employee entrance, manned by a bot. He will only allow those in who seem like they intend to work— and therefore must be wearing at least one piece of the Bunnysuit Collection to trick the guard.

Once you are made over or have snuck in, you are free to relax inside with drinks, dine on a fine meal, watch the dancers, or participate yourself if you feel brave enough. Why would anyone ever dance here? Well, that’s simple. It pays really well. So if you’re sick of games, or terrible at them— you can always come dance for a shift. Though, don't get any unseemly ideas about freeing yourself of your clothing, this isn't that kind of establishment!

⏵ haunted house ⏴

When you grow too weary or drunk from a day of games, you may be directed to somewhere a little quieter to sleep. Up the elevator, and through the doors reveals a modest walk through some woods until a quaint, victorian hotel appears. It is always nighttime here, and the stars and moon twinkle above.

The receptionist, a bot in a rather bedraggled-looking chocobo mascot costume checks you in and shows you to your room. You can sleep here, especially if you can tolerate the hokey haunted decorations strung up around the place. Though sometimes, late at night, there will come a vigorous thumping on the door to startle sleeping patrons awake- Only for the culprit to vanish and be impossible to locate.

⏵ ticket counter ⏴

The prize counter is manned by a bot and has a sign posted overhead. Most prizes will be handed over inside an appropriately sized wrapped box, as the contents are a mystery.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

This TDM may be treated as a mini-Mission. Time will not pass inside of it in relation to the world outside - meaning, this can be happening at any time between late May into early July!

This Gold Saucer is a bit of a mix between that of FF7's and FF14's, but it also has some things that neither have as well. Any inaccuracies are entirely intentional, aimed to make this rest within a space of uncanny valley for those who are familiar. While otherwise being a bit of a chaotic fantastical funhouse for everyone else! If there is something unlisted, chances are it will exist if it is in either of the other versions of the Gold Saucer.

Characters already in game are welcome to post to the TDM, too! Please mark them as current characters in your header. Threads can be kept as game canon as long as both characters get into the game!

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

It pleased her. It pleased her family. Besides, she made it seem easy.

[Being captured, that is. The ring is a simple gold band. But like simplicity it can be beautiful and full of meaning.]

I confess I find myself the fortunate one.

[Like this man said, he's got it bad.]

( Cruel is a word for it. Sam's never been interested in BB's. One of Bridges tools, and he'd cut his ties with them. And his bond to this one - to Lou - had been out of necessity. An attempt to save the kid after it had saved him, saved them from the ensuing void out that would have leveled a whole city. He doesn't expect someone who doesn't have to face the threat of BTs and the aftermath to really understand.

The more pressing thing is that he knows how casually BBs can be handled. He's seen the remains of their pods, discarded. Had been order to incinerate this one without any thought to the life in it. Though maybe it would have been a mercy if he had. But he'd needed the kid, at the end of the day. He sighs as he closes another cabinet and turns to look back at this kid.
)

Dunno if these people even knew what was in the pod. ( With the pod not hooked up, greyed out, there's no way of telling what's in it. Someone who didn't know what it was storing it somewhere casual isn't out of the realm of possibility.

He lets out a long sigh, reaches up to rub one shoulder. The perpetual, angry red marks of his cargo straps are bright against his skin, and while his senses are dull to the pain, he's thinking of the kid. The weight of his odradek on his shoulder and the sound of it whirling, the brightness of its lights, under Lou's influence.
)

I don't know if it's here, but if it is, I'm going to find it.

( The reality that Lou might not be is here a heavy one, something he's willing to accept if his efforts don't turn up anything, but he has to look. There's a heaviness in his chest that reminds him that it's his job to take care of the kid, to keep it safe, functional. And something deeper in his soul, a longing for the family he's lost that's embraced Lou as something - someone - even if he doesn't realize it just yet. )

[Wade is already crawling back to his feet, still smoking as he stumbles to his feet.]

I love that you think this would even rank among the most embarrassing things I've done in front of my friends. You're sweet. [He coughs.] Smells like bacon.

[He looks around for his katanas, finding them tossed a few feet away, just as the monster is starting to recover and turn to come at them again.] Keep your butt cheeks clenched tight, Thor! It's on your six! [He leaps to slice off a few more tentacles before they can grab either of them, despite his carelessness of his own safety, the blade doesn't even get close to touching Thor despite working around him.

Although would the blade even pierce him? Alien god and all.]

( If Sam is supposed to be offended, he's not. His lived reality for the last ten years is one of purposeful isolation - a hermit. And life as a porter doesn't leave room for much socialize with others anyway. Most others pair up, enduring the grind and weight of it with someone else to keep them sane, to stop the dying world around them from bringing them down and succumbing to the madness of it.

But Sam doesn't. Hasn't bothered with anything like that. His social skills were one of the first things to go - not that he had much to begin with.
)

Something like that, I guess.

( Not the word he'd go to first but whatever, it fits. )

I don't spend time around the people still left back home. I prefer to be alone.

( It's what he deserves after Lucy, the void out that had destroyed a whole city because of him. )

( Even if he's not in a hurry to volunteer any additional info about the monsters he's talking about, he'll ask if prompted. But to his relief, the conversation doesn't seem to be going in that direction. Leon appreciates that much, feels a bit of tension drain from his shoulders as he lets out a quiet breath.

He offers a small grin at the response, but the expression freezes on his expression at the mention of Quantico. Isn't Quantico where FBI agents go? Maybe Norman will see it in Leon's expression, in his eyes, that his mind is going somewhere else. Back to the hell hole of the NEST where he'd been about to confront Ada for lying about her identity, for using him. Not everyone is out to lie to you, he has to tell himself, head turning away briefly back to the machines.

Focus Leon, he tells himself. Not everyone is Ada.
)

Can't let anyone have any fun, right? ( Glancing back, there's a small smile. ) Don't worry, I'll keep it between us.

Dick does huff out a breath that's almost a laugh. It's not really funny, to have been so abruptly taken out and yanked back in, he can only imagine what kind of whiplash it would be to basically blink and suddenly have weeks go by in one instant, and on the other side of it for Barbara suddenly having what must have almost felt like a stranger in bed next to her for a moment. Long enough to react instinctively, and he can hardly blame her. He's sure he didn't then either.

But it is a little comedic, yes.

"A beard, huh?" He's not sure what circumstances would have led to that, he's generally very particular about shaving, as she knows better than anyone. He reaches up, reflexively rubbing at his chin, considering. "Did it look good?"

It would be hard to deny curiosity, about things that may or may not be coming ahead of him, but yeah, he knows the protocol, as well as the general uselessness of trying to base what will or won't happen on a multiverse that spirals out into countless different directions at every moment. Barbara wouldn't even know for sure, since that was ahead of her too.

"IF you want to smack me around with a pillow just for old times' sake that's fine, just don't be offended if I sleep through it."

[ Barbara follows dutifully enough, most of her attention tuning out this place after having been back and forth to it a while. The Beehive hasn't (yet) shown cause to be a grounds for a mission piece, for gold coins, or unexpected fights. It's just a stodgy rules-requiring restaurant—the same as so many others.

(Though, some part of her remains ready for that to be the reason something could. ) ]

I'd say you get used to that, but— [ The sentence drifts off with a raise of eyebrows and a half-roll of her eyes, that finish it, as the words that could slot there weren't ever meant to go beyond that addition. Even after over a year, it chafes at her—demands she cannot brook or back talk or get around. ]

There are portals into and out of Etraya for most of the missions. Sometimes they come with a timeframe, but most of the time they don't. They leave you to complete your challenge until the invisible timer in the sky says time is up, and the portal appears again.

The little noise. That almost laugh. The one that's more breath than it is laugh. Just enough to be an agreement, but not enough to be a joke. Barbara wants to curl around it. Pull it into her chest, and refuse to let go of it. Even as it comes, and then is just as instantly gone. And she thinks, if he were telling the story to another her—and, god, she doesn't entirely love the idea of just setting that thought up—he'd have made it funny—the way Dick always could.

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Laugh at me, so you're laughing with me.
Always so good at it. Producing that kind of light and laughter from anything.

(Always so good at making her laugh even when she didn't want to. Every time.)

"I believe you called it 'distinguished' every time Damian threatened to shave you in your sleep." That's light, but it wasn't his question either. It was her opinion on it, and she hadn't really. Oh, she had. But not really. "To me, it was just ... you. I've seen you in every manner of way since I was barely old enough to balance on a banister. Short shorts, and pixie boots, and tight curls. Wavy. The blue disco monstrosity." Light. Not insulting. Maybe because it's the four words before. "Bald."

Ric Grayson's choices weren't Dick's,
but it'd still been his face, his head, his body.

Her brow knitted slightly. She didn't think there was a way he could show up not like that.
Or did that make her hypocritical for all the right now seconds?
For the confusion about a loss that wasn't "lost."

"We didn't do—" Babs doesn't quite know what to call it. "—'this.' I don't know if it was because we went to bed and woke up in the same place. Or that it felt like no time had been missing at all." Between them, at least not really. A month back home wasn't the same as a year. The hours of one night fast asleep in Etraya weren't the same as months. But that feels hypocritical. He'd still been ahead, and he hadn't...

Mybe it's just that he's that much better than her.

(He's always been better than her.
Better than everyone around him.

Wait until the JLA says it, too.)

Was she trying to say that? Imply that?
Now that she'd said it, she didn't know.
Which somehow felt worse.

She curled up, just a little bit, frowning,
head ducking a little more toward her own shoulder.
For a second, it had made sense, but saying it lost it.

[ Most adults tend to avoid giving her full details. And she can imagine there's an unhappy story behind that scar. Actually, there is more that she would like to ask, she thinks... then suddenly she finds her hair getting ruffled. ]

Um- huh?! [ A look of surprise, then she breaks out into a small laugh. Her hands pull back and reach up to smooth out the strands of hair sticking out. In the short amount of time they've known each other, Verso's been giving her far more attention, praise, and affection than her own family's ever given her... ]

No, no bridges, [ Gorgug responds, shaking his head. Does he know what a Rainbow Bridge is? No, but he understands the concept enough for it to not sound too weird. If only there was a Rainbow Bridge. Any bridge. He wouldn't mind spending a week (or month) back home for a while.

But for now, he's here, and at the exchange of names-- ]

I'm Gorgug. Uh, I guess, I'll been here a while? Not the games, but-- [ he puts a finger to his earpiece. ] This stuff. I heard people got a message about what's going on? Sometimes that happens, if you-- if you showed up here, and not Etraya.

Either way, Gorgug will come to the side of the game. There's no room for him to sit, but Yuri can, and he'll point out the controls better. ]

Those sticks.. they look like the way you'll move. [ There's a video playing while the game idles, showing some of the action waiting to happen. It's a simplified display showing a blue submarine, with walls of ground shaded in blue and spiked parts that only come into view the closer the submarine gets to them. [ Gorgug hears the noise too, but unlike Alex, he has more fear for approaching danger--if you don't look at it, it doesn't exist! That will be true one day, but as Alex shouts her warning, it's obvious that today isn't the case.

He's internally yelling grievances inside his own head, but now isn't the time for that. There's the way up ahead he's got his eyes on, and the spinning cactus he sees too. ]

D-don't summon anything weird!!

[ That's a threat (plea?) to the golden, floating statuette -- before that internal screaming becomes a yell when his own snowboard comes off from the ramp following Alex. He waves his arms to the cactus, and hits it better with the advantage he has for height.

And there comes the other side, a straight line once they hit it, with a finish line just far enough to give them leeway for their speed. Balloons hang from a barrier that has the word 'GOAL!'in giant letters sat above, and cactaur statues in snow gear decorate the sides, plastic in design.

As for the bird--does it make it? The next tag shall decide if it gets across...or if a sound like a hawking avian falling into a chasm is its fate...! ]

Yes, I fear that a great deal of the time, he was always the nicer of the two of us.

[While they'd both been rejected by Syngorn and anger had been their weapons against the world, the abduction she faced that led to her finding Trinket had made Vex's distrust of outsiders that much worse. It's gotten a great deal better, but it's taken years for her to relearn that innate trust that Vax seemed willing to extend automatically.

However, both were accomplished liars and resorted to convincing lies to keep people from inquiring about them below the surface level they gave off. Unless they were completely trusted. So, it's not that surprising that this girl has no idea how Vax was at that moment.

But that question... she won't answer it. And it's a bit of a test to keep her voice flat and devoid of any emotion.]

No, I haven't seen him for quite some time.

[She'll be happy to know that time stops back home. Vex would rather not miss her daughter's life because some entity has kidnapped her.]

Well, he's not a terrible teacher, I suppose. I did learn how to pick a lock from him, but I'll have to test your skills to see just how helpful he's really been to a novice.

I'm not sure what I am right now, Keyleth. I've no idea where Percy, Trinket or the others are. And this entire building feels like the Feywild threw up in it.

All of his reactions, Sleipnir could drink them in all day, he muses. That look of soft shock rather than hard horror... delightful. All from using his name? He'll have to remember it being a tender spot for the man.

He finds himself agreeing with the emphasis; truly if humans could control themselves better perhaps we could have a kinder world. Hmm. Sleipnir's head is spinning. Those shots must be hitting him. He re-wrangles his thoughts. People in life now care. Bearer to too busy. Too busy to get busy with people who care? Or are people who care not noticing the man's yearnings? Hmmmm. Oh, Sleipnir notices he is humming thoughtfully aloud and so stops. ]

I find this only a little reassuring as you have still been left wanting.

[ He raises his hand to trail one finger, soft yet firm, along the length of Clive's arm. ]

As I said... you're not so busy now.
