⏵ arrival⏴

Arrival goes as anticipated. Characters awaken in the pristine, new hospital, greeted by Aurora and potentially getting a rundown of what's happening depending on their approach to being dropped somewhere new. The door to their room opens, and new arrivals are left free to explore their new environment.

Or what exists of it anyway. Exiting the hospital will show that there isn't much of anything just yet. Generally, Echo can build new facilities before new arrivals awaken, but it appears that this time… well, it didn't happen. The apartment complex exists, standing just beside the hospital, and there are a few facilities that are half constructed, companion bots carrying around rebar and other necessary bits and pieces, but they're not quite ready. Oops. But maybe, just maybe, one of those half-built facilities is familiar - a childhood home, a favorite supermarket, the run-down garage they worked at as a youth, a grounded spaceship in the middle of one of the massive bridges connecting land over rivers.

The companion bots will offer quiet apologies if approached; they were expecting new arrivals to touch down, but not quite this early. They'll be ready soon! A few more days at most, they promise. In the meantime, do not stray too far from the hospital. While most of Etraya looks habitable, they have not finished verifying that it's safe for its new inhabitants.

The apartment building and hospital are safe, and the land directly around them is fine, but beyond that? Stay away. But hey, the hospital's cafeteria is fully stocked with cuisine from across the multiverse! Please feel free to settle in, choose an apartment, and get to know your new friends.

⏵ water you doing?⏴

Decide not to listen? Well, the companion bots had offered their warnings.

Etraya is a new establishment, one that received newcomers before it was ready. And as such, the land has not quite been prepared for their arrival. Wandering off the land the apartment building and hospital are settled on comes with very, very poor results. Take a step down into the river below, and you'll find yourself uncomfortably hot. Or cold. Or hot and cold, because whatever that 'water' is, it wasn't meant to be played in. The only way to resolve the temperature regulation issue, as Aurora informs, is finding a buddy to cuddle up with. Those who are lucky may have a nearby friend they're familiar with and don't mind leaning a shoulder against. Those that don't? Well. . . have fun having a very uncomfortable conversation with a stranger, asking them if it's alright if you lean into them or hold their hand for a bit. Any physical contact will do, as long as it's directly skin-to-skin.

Except that's not where the contact stops. Characters will find that, for the next several hours, they'll feel everything that their companion feels. Frustration, anger, amusement, homesickness that comes from being so far away from their families and friends - all those feelings? They're not your feelings, they're our feelings now.

No explanation is given for how the empathy bond and the temperature regulation are related, but it may have to do with how since they had decided not to listen, it was time to test how well they could cohabitate with their new friends.

⏵ bonding bingo ⏴

Maybe it feels a little too much like Obi-Wan had when receiving Leia's message, but all new arrivals are their universe's only hope. Except they're not the only ones arriving, and not the only ones who are trying to keep their worlds safe. Instead, they've arrived with several others who carry the same weight on their shoulders. And they aren't meant to go through this alone. The people they've arrived with are both their new companions and their competition. Both comrades to fight beside and enemies to battle against, depending on what the specific mission of the month is. But currently?

They're here to bond. It's important to get to know those who they'll be spending the next unspecified but lengthy amount of time with, isn't it? To that extent, Aurora's hologram waits just inside the hospital's front doors, offering bonding bingo cards to those willing to participate. It's not necessary, but she does specify that this is one way to get ahead: cooperation is important, especially given what they're going to face together. Bingo cards are three long and three across, and offer a multitude of activities you can do to check each box off.

Some examples include:

  • Learn someone's biggest secret
  • Get into a fight
  • Tell someone something that you've never admitted out loud to
  • Throw a drink on someone
  • Win a game of pool in the apartment building's recreation room
  • Cheat on a card game without getting caught
  • Hug a new friend
  • Get stabbed
  • Steal something important to someone
  • Pull off an elaborate prank on a stranger

  • ⏵ matchmaker ⏴

When the earpiece is put on, a nice green HUD(head-up display) lights up in front of new arrivals. It asks them for their name, which is fairly standard for these.

Except it seems it wants them to put together a profile to help pair them off with other new arrivals. For some, this information may autofill with what Aurora was able to discern about them from watching them in their home worlds. But some lucky individuals may catch their profiles before they're posted live, and have the opportunity to edit out information included in fields, even if they're not able to clear it out entirely.

Welcome to Aurora's idea of matchmaking. Have fun getting paired off with a buddy or four, with your profiles exchanged between one another. Maybe they're the perfect match. Maybe this is a nightmare in the making.

[The cloak hangs large even on his frame and on her it's almost like a child playing dress up, but he didn't have better options at the moment.]

Anakin. [He glances off to the side, suddenly awkward in the face of her gratitude.] ...are you sure you don't mind--

[He makes a weak gesture at her.]

[ Krouse tenses up again from the neck down when she takes that step closer, shoulders setting in anticipation even while his face stays fixedly calm. ]

The hologram said we're here to prove our worlds deserve to be saved.

[ He hasn't questioned the premise. His world is doomed. He even has the time table for it. Hearing the same thing from his new captor didn't come as a surprise. ]

There's something about the ease that this stranger picks up a rapport that Krouse isn't sure he likes, which is odd in and of itself. Krouse doesn't have many opinions lately. He doesn't know why he'd have a problem with it, either. There's nothing wrong with being friendly.

"I'd guess it was whoever brought us here," he offers, which is so obvious he doubts it's news. "They seem to be pulling some impressive things off."

Like lifting Krouse out of the most secure prison on the planet, for instance.

"...what do you mean, 'reconstruction'?" He asks, with an intent that's a departure from his previous bland neutrality.

[By now Helena's squatted down on the river bank itself and she can legitimately feel the harsh swivel of that wolf inside of her's ears. They point his way and she looks the same direction.

He's got the tact to betray nothing. She's too close to that wolf side of herself and ends up watching him with some shade of distrust before she wrangles her instincts back in line. Then she sharply looks away.]

No kidding.

[She sounds gruffling unhappy about that too.]

[The change in Anakin is quite extraordinary. One moment he's a sullen young man, glaring at the room at large, the next he's on his feet, a smile stretching wide across his face.]

Angel!

[He's bounding over to her uncaring of anything else as long as he gets to sweep her up in his arms.]

Oh, no, no! I would've done the same and I don't think my dress would have fit you, if I did.

( she waves a hand weakly at him, the cloak slipping down over one shoulder at the movement, so she catches it quickly and wraps up once more. it is very warm. she could probably have tossed all the water she wanted at him and he still wouldn't have gotten cold.

though, the mental image of her offering him her dress, knee-length and flapper-style, is a little amusing. she giggles. )

Maybe I should try to fight you instead.

( if she can tick off the box without winning, it would at least be an amusing way to pass the time. anakin seems nice, in his own way. he reminds her of someone. or maybe that's wishful thinking. the truth is, he reminds her of someone, if that someone had come from a very different world than hers. )

I: Arrival
Choose an apartment? What about rent? Leases? Tenant insurance?

[Clearly someone had their priorities straight, and it was the guy standing there with a white cane with a red tip and red glasses on, turning around with a slightly bemused expression. Had he been expecting this? No. Was he going to have to roll with it? Apparently until he could figure out how to leave. He'd listened through the, ah, introduction, but he'd been overwhelmed by the differences in everything he was picking up here versus back home. The background noise was different. Many, many less heartbeats to filter through. Less population noise. Just less of everything in general, and the smells were taking getting used to. Which is why he might be distracted enough to accidentally bump into someone while trying to get his bearing.]

Sorry. Sorry. I, ah, wasn't looking where I was going.

II: Matchmaker (Clearly did not see this before it went out)

Matt Murdock (32)
Friendly lawyer looking for friendly anyone! Loves the big city! Snappy dresser! Has a huuuuuuuuuuuuge ... amount of faith. Does not like bad people! Don't be bad!

III: Wildcard
[Want to find him somewhere else? Bump into him eating. Or maybe snooping. Or anything. Open to all. I prefer to play him from unconscious end of Defenders/pulled just as the hole collapses era (I'm waiting until Born Again to do a full series catchup). He's still a dumb loser, but he's a loser without his ninja suit, so he's going to feel some kind of way about that. Not that anyone here knows about that...]

"You think it's a person?"

She's not smart enough to really understand most of what he's saying but she gets that. And the thought that it's a person or people or whatever makes her skin crawl. She doesn't know what she'd hoped it'd be but hearing someone else admit that it could be a person means she has to face it too.

And she doesn't like it, doesn't like knowing that someone could have that much fucking power.

Jessica shakes her head, eyes skimming over him. The jacket is too big, the buttons shiny like they'd just been polished. Maybe military? Maybe stolen?

"You know someone who could do this? Because I sure as shit don't."

[ Krouse hesitates before he returns the introduction. ]

Krouse.

[ There's something about saying his name that feels like admitting to something he shouldn't, but if he walks around calling himself Trickster, there's going to be follow up questions with answers he'll have to lie about.

It doesn't really matter. It hasn't in a long time. He's never going home, and the connection between one identity and the other only meant anything when that was still a possibility. ]

And I don't think I was good at it. My uncle just had a table in his basement.

[ There are memories there, if he wants to think about them. He doesn't. ]

Do you think that's it?

[ At the end of the hallway they've reached, there's a sign reading RECREATION ROOM over a pair of double doors. It's a good enough reason to pivot away from personal trivia. ]

( it's consideration. sylvie recognises it. water is consideration, because it doesn't discolour like wine does and it doesn't stink like strong spirits. water dries and water will leave you without much of a trace. she smiles widely up at the other woman, following her readily, hands buried in the folds of her own skirt, billowing around her legs.

consideration is still foreign enough, she doesn't know what to do with it. armand showed her care, and she showed care in turn. is that the answer?

so, she thinks for a moment, cocking her head to one side before saying: )

But water isn't as much fun to drink. Wouldn't you like the thrill?

( can't i give you that much in return, it means, although she doesn't even know the woman's name, so it's not something to be said. yet. there's a time for everything. to harvest and to sow, the aunties would say. )

Wouldn't be the first time I've been told that.

So tall guy with a... blaster? I don't think I've seen anyone with one.

Is he human too?

[ The vial wasn't really a vial. Not for Noelle. It was a little paper cup, with flowers on it. Small, easy to hold, just large enough to use it to swallow a pill or two. Krouse had to help her drink. It hurt too much to hold. Noelle still remembers. He laid his fingers over hers, tipped the cup up, and nobody else had touched her that gently since.

If it happens, he'd said, blame me. ]

Wasn't just you.

[ Noelle murmurs into his hair. It would hurt him too much to agree, hurt him too much to disagree, so there's the truth instead. ]

The rest of them didn't let me tell them, either. Didn't even want to look at me. Too busy remembering somebody else.

[ Noelle's tears slow. Her voice drops, and a little bit of that old hollowness starts to creep in. She lets her forehead rest against the top of Krouse's head, and she closes her eyes, like that even matters anymore. ]

There was a portal. I think Tattletale made it. I don't know. They had to kill me before she was going to let them use it. I hope they made it home, and then - then they'll never have to see me again.

“Depends on one’s definition of ‘person,’ but essentially, yes.” On instinct Palamedes searches his pockets for a pencil, but all he finds is the bingo card the hologram had handed to him, which he sets aside. He should have figured—naturally, Ianthe Naberius the First wouldn’t have carried around something as practical and pedestrian as a writing utensil.

“In principle, I know how it could be done, but the only models I’m aware of are much smaller in scale.” Technically, he can only think of one model for a pocket universe, and it’s the one he created, but this doesn’t seem like the time to get into those details. “Something like this would require a shocking amount of power.”

❥ arrival.
Waking up in a hospital isn't surprising for Rosie considering what she remembers of her last moments. The rest though? The rest is... Huh. Well, that's unfortunate. Considering she's pretty sure her life as it was is over though, she's not as torn up about her world being potentially lost too as one might assume.

"Hell yeah," she says, quiet but enthusiastic, "free food." Excuse her as she just stuffs her face in the cafeteria.

"What the heck is this?" she asks, anyone nearby as if they might know. She's holding up a plate of Gagh and pokes one of the wiggly worm noodles. "Dare you try it," she'll tease. Even if the other person doesn't take her up on it, she might just try it herself. Although she's a canine, they do have that saying about curiosity and cats. Right? It'll probably be fine.

❥ water you doing?
Like many people, Rosie ends up not listening to the companion bots warnings and taking a lovely stroll. When she comes across the river, it's instinct to dip her hand in and feel the temperature. "Fucking A," she hisses, drawing back swiftly. The woman waves her hand to get the water off and grits her teeth.

"It feels like it's boiling," she huffs. Only a moment later though, it's instead freezing her to the bone. Despite her resistance to cold, it hits her had. Goosebumps rise along her arm as she shivers now.

"Of course the water's fucked," she says, kicking a rock. "Everything's fucked in this stupid place! Ugh!" Maybe someone isn't handling the 'end of her world' as well as she's been trying to play off.

❥bonding bingo.
At the end of the multiverse as they know it, at least there's bingo.

Bonding Bingo Go
Hug A New Friend Pull A Prank Get Stabbed
Cheat During A Card Game Throw A Drink On Someone Admit A Secret
Get Into A Fight Find Something In Common Play Would You Rather

Now that she has her mission, she's going to walk up to someone and ask: "Would you perchance like to be stabbed?" She's not serious. Or is she? Who knows!

❥ matchmaker.

Enjoys the simple things and wishes for a quiet life with lots of dogs.

Or so she says. In reality, she's a nightmare dressed as a daydream. Engage at your own risk.

Really? Oh well that's -- um. Hm.

Is there even alcohol here?

[What a stupid thing to think about after being told her world is over and she's it's only hope. Yet so many things had been going on at home and something normal seemed really nice right about now. Her answer is gently sheepish.]

Sorry. I'd love to when there's time though. And, well, maybe places considering how barren this whole area is...
