TDM 008

content warnings for this TDM include: gambling references, mild horror themes and suggestive content

⏵ arrival⏴

Arrival does not happen as Aurora usually plans for it. Newcomers generally find themselves waking up within the hospital, are given a brief overview of their situation, and sent on their way. Now? They wake up immersed in a game within The Gold Saucer. But it doesn't quite feel like a game: whether it's snowy mountains, riding a chocobo as you listened to the wind quickly pass by your ears, or in the middle of a battle with a beast, it feels utterly real.

It's only after the game concludes - either by winning or losing - that you find yourself back in the main game area. A bot, dressed as personnel in this lavish playground, approaches each arrival with an earpiece allowing them to communicate with those in their same situation. It also serves to inform them of their goal: collect enough gold saucer points (or GP) by playing the games to acquire a card fashioned to their own likeness from the game counter. Then, they must trade it for someone else's. Seems simple enough, right? Hopefully the cards aren't too expensive...

⏵ the gold saucer ⏴

The Gold Saucer is an ode to the very idea of fun. It’s huge, labyrinthine, colorful, and lively. Everywhere you look, there’s something to do. At the same time, it’s also impossible to tell what time it is. There are no windows to the outside, there are no clocks. This place is beyond such a thing.

There are games everywhere you look, ranging from the pseudo-gambling to sports to pixelated video games in cabinets. Yet no matter which boxing game, pinball machine, or skeeball machine you look at, the same creatures and themes arrive. Cactuars, chocobos, the fiercest Behemoth, the cuddliest Moogle… For those from the realms of Final Fantasy, this will feel natural- homey even. Everyone else will simply understand that there is a fairly strong central theme here about magic, machines, and monsters.

It’s hard to tell how long you spend here, and it seems to sit outside of the very concept of time. Still, there are many restaurants, lounges, and vending machines. There are shops and costume rentals. There are even little pharmacies with headache remedies if the partying gets out of hand. And when you grow tired, there is a hotel- though it is made up like a haunted house, you can count on getting some semi-restful sleep.

⏵ playtime ⏴
Interdimensional Games

At first, stepping through to play any of these games may make participants wonder if they have been teleported somewhere else entirely. But on closer inspection, all the skies above are merely well-constructed interiors with painted ceilings. After all, it always seems to be daytime during these games.

Snowboarding - Race to the bottom of the mountain, but avoid obstacles and complete as many tricks as possible!

Chocobo Racing- Race on Chocobo-back around a treacherous outdoors race track which can either be taking place in a desert, a swampy forest, or upon an island beach. Work in tandem with your rented bird and against your competition by throwing hazards in their way or utilizing buffs garnered on the track. Different colored birds will yield different advantages.

Yellow - Good All Rounder
Red - Fast, but hard to steer
Blue - Slower, but very easy to steer. Much easier to pick up items from them.
Green- Resilient against traps and sabotage

Colosseum Battle- Face off against the fiercest beasts around. Pair up with friends or rivals to Collaborate or Compete to do the most damage and deliver the final blow. These battles are synced to the comparative power of the one entering the competition.

We wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt unnecessarily, after all. And indeed, no one will get seriously, gruesomely, or permanently injured in these battles. Those without fighting capabilities can rent weapons outfitted Materia to assist them in their trial. These will allow anyone to cast spells, though not guarantee any better wielding of weapons. There are a hundred rounds, starting with fairly simple Spriggans, ranging all the way up to blood-thirsty Behemoths to challenge even the most battle-hardened hero.

Gold Saucer Games

Leap of Faith- Players are presented with an obstacle course that stretches a hundred feet into the air upon floating platforms and islands. Both are held aloft by magical crystals. Powers are entirely nerfed, though falling and hitting the ground is strangely painless. Those who collect the most silver and gold statuettes of cactuars placed at random throughout the course will be awarded proportionate GP; though there is a bonus for those that reach the very top first.

Triple Triad- Everywhere you look, people are playing this game on little 3 by 3 boards, or any surface with enough space. You will be given a loaner deck to play with. Are you clever enough to defeat your fellows.

Fashion Report- Theobold, familiar to some, stands by himself in a little booth with a dressing room and an incredibly expansive walk-in closet. He is a robot of distinguished fashion and strong opinions on those fashions. Do you dare subject yourself to his scrutiny? Come prepare in his wondrous closets to make the best outfit for the chance to win a prize. Please submit your fashion here!

There are Arcade Machines and activities galore. If you can think of it, it’s probably there- Just with that Final Fantasy pastiche on it, of course.

⏵ the beehive lounge ⏴

There are other places to eat at the Gold Saucer, but the vending machines and cafés all pale in comparison to the dinners at the Beehive.

For all the rave reviews, there is a dress code at the Beehive, and this is literal. If you step inside and are not currently wearing a dress, you will be ushered into a sideroom and appropriately made over.

However, this is only for those trying to go in through the normal doors. Around the side there happens to be an employee entrance, manned by a bot. He will only allow those in who seem like they intend to work— and therefore must be wearing at least one piece of the Bunnysuit Collection to trick the guard.

Once you are made over or have snuck in, you are free to relax inside with drinks, dine on a fine meal, watch the dancers, or participate yourself if you feel brave enough. Why would anyone ever dance here? Well, that’s simple. It pays really well. So if you’re sick of games, or terrible at them— you can always come dance for a shift. Though, don't get any unseemly ideas about freeing yourself of your clothing, this isn't that kind of establishment!

⏵ haunted house ⏴

When you grow too weary or drunk from a day of games, you may be directed to somewhere a little quieter to sleep. Up the elevator, and through the doors reveals a modest walk through some woods until a quaint, victorian hotel appears. It is always nighttime here, and the stars and moon twinkle above.

The receptionist, a bot in a rather bedraggled-looking chocobo mascot costume checks you in and shows you to your room. You can sleep here, especially if you can tolerate the hokey haunted decorations strung up around the place. Though sometimes, late at night, there will come a vigorous thumping on the door to startle sleeping patrons awake- Only for the culprit to vanish and be impossible to locate.

⏵ ticket counter ⏴

The prize counter is manned by a bot and has a sign posted overhead. Most prizes will be handed over inside an appropriately sized wrapped box, as the contents are a mystery.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

This TDM may be treated as a mini-Mission. Time will not pass inside of it in relation to the world outside - meaning, this can be happening at any time between late May into early July!

This Gold Saucer is a bit of a mix between that of FF7's and FF14's, but it also has some things that neither have as well. Any inaccuracies are entirely intentional, aimed to make this rest within a space of uncanny valley for those who are familiar. While otherwise being a bit of a chaotic fantastical funhouse for everyone else! If there is something unlisted, chances are it will exist if it is in either of the other versions of the Gold Saucer.

Characters already in game are welcome to post to the TDM, too! Please mark them as current characters in your header. Threads can be kept as game canon as long as both characters get into the game!

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

( She presses her tongue to her teeth and shifts to address his back and side, listening and making small noises of acknowledgement as she does. )

If it's what you and your people want, it will be. Not to say it'll be easy, there's a lot involved in basic education, but when people want something enough? They can make it happen.

( She sits back a little to raise her eyebrows and get a better look at his face. )

Where I'm reckless, it's usually not with my heart involved.

( ... Some stretching of the truth may be there, but she's sincere: she doesn't play around assuming her heart's fine. She can't. Recent events have made that exceedingly clear, both in the dangers and the consequences, unfathomable as they are.

Alex returns to her work, though she ends up having to walk on her knees across part of the bed to get behind him.
)

But thank you for the offer. At this point, I think the most help any of us can be for each other is directly supportive, right? If we're playing some larger game than anything here in the Gold Saucer.

( Alex, who'd mostly been glad that the Haunted Hotel allows for bathing facilities that aren't usually pulling tricks like making the water look like blood, is freshly bathed and dressed in Gold Saucer commemorative clothing. She has a towel draped around her shoulders while she's still drying her hair, and that's when she hears the knocking at her door.

Which, granted, she's also chased phantom knocking around here for the sake of letting other people rest easy, but in this moment... Oh, right. A voice.

Alex cracks open the door, foot braced against the bottom, to peer... out... and down. At who's standing there.

... A very small part of her wonders why she feels like she's about to address a mascot character. Then again, that's how she's felt at various points here at the Gold Saucer, and not because she's run into any mascot characters of any kind.
)

... Can I help you?

So that's where the "deepspace" comes in, I take it.

[ That was going to be his next question. ]

Doesn't sound too different from being a jujutsu sorcerer in practice, though. Even if the origins are pretty different.

[ Fighting monsters and chronically understaffed? Yep. Although her Hunter's Association is possibly (hopefully) a bit more ethical about minimum recruitment age. ]

No one will ever claim we had anyone creative naming things that year.

( She says, feeling blithe enough about it. Not skin off her nose for how things were named. It didn't change that they all existed, right? Plus, it's a little amusing. )

So, jujutsu sorcerer?

( She quirks up her eyebrows. (And thankfully, the Hunter's Association is not, like so much of media, into child soldiers.) )

[The heat of the friction melts the ice, so his sneakers get a better grip on the floor as he keeps on running.] Next time I'm bringing snowshoes.

[Roll for perception: a 15, not bad! Enough to figure out he might be throwing the attack from above. Even if he can't see it, he feels it. Instinct and reflex kick in.

Leaving the tornado to ride out the momentum, he launches into motion-- bounding up the cascading icicles like a reverse lightning bolt, using each of them like stair steps. Their random pattern is not a problem for the fastest thing alive, of course (just hit the quick action buttons in time!). The wolf might be hiding behind an illusion, or something like a refractive barrier, like the ones you hear about in Star Trek from the Klingons. But there's a split second where the light catches on it and bends a little too wrong, and makes it look like the space is a little wrinkled. It's super easy to miss, but as he gets closer, he can see it.]

Found you! [He coils and charges to hit it with a spin dash, ready to explode with chaotic energy.]

The last platform looms ahead, and from recent experience Dick recognizes the huge flower underneath it as a kind of trampoline that's meant to launch them up there. He's going to dive forward into it, having a decent enough idea of how he needs to angle his flip to make sure that it sends him sliding swiftly across the finish line rather than missing it entirely. If he miscalculated now and went sailing off the ledge, even if he grappled right back up to it, Barbara would (rightfully) never let him live it down.

He's expecting her to be right beside him or right on his heels, whether she takes it from the same approach or decides to go her own way. Whoever wins in the end, it won't be by much.

"Sure, but is there one with your face on it?"

It's possible that she's been playing the games as long as he has, he's been keeping an eye out for anyone or anything interesting here, but it's so huge and full of distractions that it's far from unlikely to miss even a familiar face while he's preoccupied elsewhere. He had to stay busy somehow, lacking any option outside of this strange place. The robots weren't helpful there, it seemed like he was supposed to stay here for some indeterminate length of time, whether or not he's achieved the ostensible goal of this outing.

That'll be one of the more immediately relevant questions to ask Barbara once they're back on the ground.

donquixote rosinante (corazon) | one piece | new!

[personal profile] hasklutz 2025-06-17 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
a. arrival

[ The sequence of events goes roughly like this: Rosinante is dying. Then he's less dead and strapped to a snowboard. Then he's rolling down the slope without a singular scrap of grace or dignity because he's absentminded and clumsy even on good days, let alone... whatever this is.

And then he's in some sort of. Casino? Call it a casino. Getting an earpiece from a robot.

No ghost town of an island. No navy ships, no pirates, no exit. No Law. (He can't work out if that's a good thing. It must be, right?)

He sticks out like a sore thumb, stumbling around trying to get his bearings-- if being 9'7", bloody, wearing a huge black feathered coat and sporting conspicuous facepaint choices wasn't enough, Corazon leaves a small trail of destruction in his wake to boot. Stumbling into things, tripping over his own feet and falling down... accidentally lighting his coat on fire. Such is his lot in life.

So this is essentially the arrival free space on the bingo card! Local man out here, confused and constantly scanning the crowd like he expects immediate danger. Maybe asking if there might happen to be, like, first aid supplies nearby. Maybe.

If he's not dead, he might as well keep it that way with a patch job until he can figure out his next move. ]

b. welcome to the obby.

[ Rosinante steers clear of things like snowboarding and the colosseum as best as he can on this apparent quest to make some money. Straightforward combat doesn't tend to suit him and hurtling down mountains suits him even less.

His bread and butter largely comes down to Triple Triad playing, to mixed results. It's his best option in any case. More about thinking and observing, strategy. Luck. Luck's not his best area. But hey.

He also makes occasional runs at Leap of Faith! Less successfully. Once in a rare while, he really locks in and nails it. Most of the time, though, he's misstepping and hitting the ground. It's raining... man. Singular. Why does he keep doing this? What does dignity feel like again? ]

Damn. I really thought I had it worked out this time!

c. beehive lounge.

[ ... ykw, sure, whatever. Rosinante can work with this dress code. He just did a few years undercover with pirates, he can tolerate a dress for twenty minutes while he sits down for a real meal (and some real alcohol). Puts a few too many scars on display for his liking, but this is the lesser of two evils. And looking at those bunny collection heels, comparatively hardly evil at all.

Being part of a wait staff isn't his calling. Even he knows he's more likely to drop hot soup onto someone's lap than he is to work effectively at something like this.

There's a lot to cope with right now. A lot happening in his life, or afterlife, or whichever. Gotta think. Gotta regroup. Or something. ]

I'm not sure how all this qualifies as a mission...

[ Like are they saving the economy running around in here or what? Much to consider. ]

d. wildcard.

[ for all other miscellanious prompts and whatnot. i'm down for whatever, Corazon's gonna be making all his rounds. including the haunted hotel. all a man can do is try to stave of the grip of dread and terror until such time as he is free from this establishment. feel free to hmu about different/closed prompts, etc.! ]

[ This day keeps getting weirder.

It doesn’t take very long for Sonic to recognize who he helped. Black fur. Ears and tail like his own. The familiar glint of gold. And that light… he’d know (chaos control) anywhere. ]

Sha —

[ Before he can finish, Sonic is comically intterupted by a face full of lavalisk.

It wastes no time snapping at him. Sonic responds by sharpening his quills, hoping to give his attacker a prickly warning. It works well enough. The lavalisk hisses, flailing around before deciding Sonic isn’t worth the trouble. It scrambles off and away, finding a distant corner of the arena to brood in.

With a moment to breathe, Sonic turns to Shadow and opens his mouth… only to close it without saying anything, noticeably taken aback at the sight of him. It's Shadow. It also isn't. It’s like coming home and realizing all your furniture has been moved slightly to the left. The only thing he can think to say is what he couldn’t earlier: ]

… Shadow?

[ Maybe. This could be another “I’m actually a Knight of the Round Table and we’re going to fight now” situation, he thinks. Hopefully not — those creatures look ready for round two. ]

We exorcise curses. We have for a long time, actually; since they're a byproduct of negative emotions, there have been jujutsu sorcerers in Japan for about as long as the historical record goes back.

[ The main thing that's changed is the level of organization...which still frankly isn't great, given some of the infighting and factionalism, but at least it's not the Heian era when sorcerers spent as much time jumping each other and fighting for kicks as they did actually dealing with curses. ]

... [Well, he does get a response to the name. By which we mean Shadow is at least looking at him. A moment's pause is enough for him to assess this isn't the Sonic he knows. Unless he shaved his arms, the first obvious difference. Their fur seems finer and less fluff, and that voice...different kind of annoying.

Good news for Sonic, he's not interested in challenging him to a duel. He sidesteps as a wave of flames nearly catches him, continuing towards Sonic. They can cast fire. Wonderful. Dealing with this new blue hedgehog will have to wait as the remaining three creatures start to circle them, making a perimeter. A sharp teeth on every side. One looks ready to spit more fire their way, while the other two rushes at them.]

He's thinking that they can find a table somewhere out of the way where they can talk. He has so much to catch up with in general, he already knows, and while he's got a lead on most of that, thanks to Damian, there's still more that he's just going to have to work on as he goes. And with Jason specifically? Yeah, it's still all sinking in.

But it's good. That they can talk like this.

None of them can compete with Cheese Viking.

( which is not only the best arcade game in the history of arcade games, but he's also managed to get his own cabinet installed in the common room of the manor back on the islands. one he's spent the last several months playing, repetitively, to beat his own high scores. there's that, and the small game boy he'd found with pokemon. one of these days someone is going to introduce him to animal crossing and he's going to spend hours perfecting his lands like the obsessive person he is.

but that's not a now problem. now he's instead walking grayson over to the emptiest space he can find without going to the haunted house, so he can turn around and - look at him, arms crossed over his chest. )

Are you okay?

( they've got a lot of ground to cover, but damian knows this is the - likely the best place to start. whether or not grayson chooses to answer honestly, he'll at least give damian a good idea of where he should start. this isn't the time nor place for digging into everything, not when they're stuck in non-neutral ground, but he doesn't want to send grayson off to find the others here without some idea of what to anticipate from them. )

Dion does not, in fact, agree with Sleipnir's assertion. As he once told Odin, he knows more than the man realizes. This has not changed, but where Odin had not pursued the line of thought, Sleipnir might.

He'd rather speak with Joshua on the matter before tipping his hand, the truth being what it is. It's difficult to gauge how Ultima's servants might respond to knowledge of the future, were they to accept it at all. ]

[His eyes follow the blue hedgehog when they coil up and take aim. He traces the path they were heading, spotting the strange distortion under the light. This seems too obvious. The way this beast has been fighting, some thought has been put into some of their attacks. Not as mindless as their previous foes. But it's already too late to warn Sonic.

So instead, he raises his hands, energy crackling as chaos spears form around him. He then sends them in the same direction Sonic was heading. Sure enough, once the blue hedgehog shatters the barrier, he'll be met by more icicles aimed towards the intruder. The Great Wolf wasn't in view.

The explosion of energy on top of the chaos spears will be enough to stop most of the icicles', shattering them into smaller pieces, which were a danger in themselves by how sharp they were. It's after all those attacks have been used, that the wolf makes it's presence known again. Leaping up from beneath Sonic, jaws open to try and bite down on the blue hedgehog. But they're going to feel a sharp tug as Shadow arrives to grab it by the tail and sends it slamming back onto the ground.]
