TDM 008

content warnings for this TDM include: gambling references, mild horror themes and suggestive content

⏵ arrival⏴

Arrival does not happen as Aurora usually plans for it. Newcomers generally find themselves waking up within the hospital, are given a brief overview of their situation, and sent on their way. Now? They wake up immersed in a game within The Gold Saucer. But it doesn't quite feel like a game: whether it's snowy mountains, riding a chocobo as you listened to the wind quickly pass by your ears, or in the middle of a battle with a beast, it feels utterly real.

It's only after the game concludes - either by winning or losing - that you find yourself back in the main game area. A bot, dressed as personnel in this lavish playground, approaches each arrival with an earpiece allowing them to communicate with those in their same situation. It also serves to inform them of their goal: collect enough gold saucer points (or GP) by playing the games to acquire a card fashioned to their own likeness from the game counter. Then, they must trade it for someone else's. Seems simple enough, right? Hopefully the cards aren't too expensive...

⏵ the gold saucer ⏴

The Gold Saucer is an ode to the very idea of fun. It’s huge, labyrinthine, colorful, and lively. Everywhere you look, there’s something to do. At the same time, it’s also impossible to tell what time it is. There are no windows to the outside, there are no clocks. This place is beyond such a thing.

There are games everywhere you look, ranging from the pseudo-gambling to sports to pixelated video games in cabinets. Yet no matter which boxing game, pinball machine, or skeeball machine you look at, the same creatures and themes arrive. Cactuars, chocobos, the fiercest Behemoth, the cuddliest Moogle… For those from the realms of Final Fantasy, this will feel natural- homey even. Everyone else will simply understand that there is a fairly strong central theme here about magic, machines, and monsters.

It’s hard to tell how long you spend here, and it seems to sit outside of the very concept of time. Still, there are many restaurants, lounges, and vending machines. There are shops and costume rentals. There are even little pharmacies with headache remedies if the partying gets out of hand. And when you grow tired, there is a hotel- though it is made up like a haunted house, you can count on getting some semi-restful sleep.

⏵ playtime ⏴
Interdimensional Games

At first, stepping through to play any of these games may make participants wonder if they have been teleported somewhere else entirely. But on closer inspection, all the skies above are merely well-constructed interiors with painted ceilings. After all, it always seems to be daytime during these games.

Snowboarding - Race to the bottom of the mountain, but avoid obstacles and complete as many tricks as possible!

Chocobo Racing- Race on Chocobo-back around a treacherous outdoors race track which can either be taking place in a desert, a swampy forest, or upon an island beach. Work in tandem with your rented bird and against your competition by throwing hazards in their way or utilizing buffs garnered on the track. Different colored birds will yield different advantages.

Yellow - Good All Rounder
Red - Fast, but hard to steer
Blue - Slower, but very easy to steer. Much easier to pick up items from them.
Green- Resilient against traps and sabotage

Colosseum Battle- Face off against the fiercest beasts around. Pair up with friends or rivals to Collaborate or Compete to do the most damage and deliver the final blow. These battles are synced to the comparative power of the one entering the competition.

We wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt unnecessarily, after all. And indeed, no one will get seriously, gruesomely, or permanently injured in these battles. Those without fighting capabilities can rent weapons outfitted Materia to assist them in their trial. These will allow anyone to cast spells, though not guarantee any better wielding of weapons. There are a hundred rounds, starting with fairly simple Spriggans, ranging all the way up to blood-thirsty Behemoths to challenge even the most battle-hardened hero.

Gold Saucer Games

Leap of Faith- Players are presented with an obstacle course that stretches a hundred feet into the air upon floating platforms and islands. Both are held aloft by magical crystals. Powers are entirely nerfed, though falling and hitting the ground is strangely painless. Those who collect the most silver and gold statuettes of cactuars placed at random throughout the course will be awarded proportionate GP; though there is a bonus for those that reach the very top first.

Triple Triad- Everywhere you look, people are playing this game on little 3 by 3 boards, or any surface with enough space. You will be given a loaner deck to play with. Are you clever enough to defeat your fellows.

Fashion Report- Theobold, familiar to some, stands by himself in a little booth with a dressing room and an incredibly expansive walk-in closet. He is a robot of distinguished fashion and strong opinions on those fashions. Do you dare subject yourself to his scrutiny? Come prepare in his wondrous closets to make the best outfit for the chance to win a prize. Please submit your fashion here!

There are Arcade Machines and activities galore. If you can think of it, it’s probably there- Just with that Final Fantasy pastiche on it, of course.

⏵ the beehive lounge ⏴

There are other places to eat at the Gold Saucer, but the vending machines and cafés all pale in comparison to the dinners at the Beehive.

For all the rave reviews, there is a dress code at the Beehive, and this is literal. If you step inside and are not currently wearing a dress, you will be ushered into a sideroom and appropriately made over.

However, this is only for those trying to go in through the normal doors. Around the side there happens to be an employee entrance, manned by a bot. He will only allow those in who seem like they intend to work— and therefore must be wearing at least one piece of the Bunnysuit Collection to trick the guard.

Once you are made over or have snuck in, you are free to relax inside with drinks, dine on a fine meal, watch the dancers, or participate yourself if you feel brave enough. Why would anyone ever dance here? Well, that’s simple. It pays really well. So if you’re sick of games, or terrible at them— you can always come dance for a shift. Though, don't get any unseemly ideas about freeing yourself of your clothing, this isn't that kind of establishment!

⏵ haunted house ⏴

When you grow too weary or drunk from a day of games, you may be directed to somewhere a little quieter to sleep. Up the elevator, and through the doors reveals a modest walk through some woods until a quaint, victorian hotel appears. It is always nighttime here, and the stars and moon twinkle above.

The receptionist, a bot in a rather bedraggled-looking chocobo mascot costume checks you in and shows you to your room. You can sleep here, especially if you can tolerate the hokey haunted decorations strung up around the place. Though sometimes, late at night, there will come a vigorous thumping on the door to startle sleeping patrons awake- Only for the culprit to vanish and be impossible to locate.

⏵ ticket counter ⏴

The prize counter is manned by a bot and has a sign posted overhead. Most prizes will be handed over inside an appropriately sized wrapped box, as the contents are a mystery.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

This TDM may be treated as a mini-Mission. Time will not pass inside of it in relation to the world outside - meaning, this can be happening at any time between late May into early July!

This Gold Saucer is a bit of a mix between that of FF7's and FF14's, but it also has some things that neither have as well. Any inaccuracies are entirely intentional, aimed to make this rest within a space of uncanny valley for those who are familiar. While otherwise being a bit of a chaotic fantastical funhouse for everyone else! If there is something unlisted, chances are it will exist if it is in either of the other versions of the Gold Saucer.

Characters already in game are welcome to post to the TDM, too! Please mark them as current characters in your header. Threads can be kept as game canon as long as both characters get into the game!

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

"Are you naught but spectacle?" Barnabas chides him, though it isn't that Joshua's attacks did nothing. The beast's roars of pain and thrashing told much of their effects. Still, the overwrought nature of his magic, needing to rely upon it to be effective against the creature, says much about his ability as a combatant in Barnabas' view. As the beasts flames rapidly lick at the air once more, Barnabas is quick to move—his boot heel landing square on the snout of the lion as he kicks off of it to scale upward.

With his sword in hand, he uses the blast of Joshua's dissipating fire as cover to bring a blind strike to the ram-head's eyes. The blade gouging them with a precise swing of the blade, earning his efforts a pained and icy shriek.

Keeping his balance upon the back of the bucking beast, Barnabas is quick to parry the dragon-head's jaws as it attempts to rend him with its fangs. The ram head, however, flails and swings aimless and wild, missing Barnabas, but striking the chimera's sides and the neck of the dragon's head with its horns in its desperation. All the while, the lion head shoots off fire at Joshua—for at least he's something it can see.

[At least Sonic understands that the first one is usually the best--]

Not here, but back in Etraya, there's a decent selection of movies that you can watch. There's no theater, so it's just mostly grabbing something from the store and bringing it back to your room. Missing out on the big screen and the state of the art speakers, but at least that means you can eat whatever junk food you want.

[Granted, he just snuck in food most of the time anyway. Shit's expensive back home, he's not about to pay more in snacks than watching the movie itself-- although having the full experience is necessary here and there. Just. Not all the time.

Maybe when they get back to Etraya... he and Sonic can watch something though. Hm.]

But yeah, pretty much. I tend to just avoid him when I can. [He shrugs a little, just assuming that's what Shadow would prefer too.]

[ Sleipnir slips out of the shadows a moment after that little display. He hums a little as he saunters over to pick up the bag Mythos had left on the ground.

Upon glancing within his smile grows. What an excellent token to remember this night with.

Extensibly Sleipnir wonders if His Majesty might have use of him tonight. He would not mind if it were to be so.

Then, bag in hand, off down the hall to his own room he goes. ]

[Clea paints the picture of a familiar figure. For her siblings she is a sister. For his wife a daughter. For him she is daughter and stranger both - depending on which image of her is presented at the moment. The former would find him welcoming and respectful of her disappearance, understanding of her need for privacy. The latter would find him stern but understanding, loving but impartial, objective of what she had done and what she could do.

Disappointed. Resentful. Yearning. Those three will only come after a deep conversation, and should she prove herself to be her, then this conversation will be efficent. One more thing the three of them have in common.]

Easier to consider it vulgar, than to consider it might reveal internal desire.

[He stands a short distance away with a glass of whiskey, giving her the kind of stern and critical eye reserved for those who have the wrong opinion. How she reacts to a lesson will tell him what he needs to know. If she is sober enough to manage. But in any case, he will put himself as a shield between her and his family every time.]

[Sleipnir speaks true. It would be best to appraise him, yet it feels more like an indulgence to step away from the task at hand to do so. Because he knows, he is well aware that doing so would serve him as a comfort and not simply an aid in their mission here. Yet...

Yet...]

Let us away.

[The race can wait. Should Sleipnir be better informed of what is going on here, of what he has missed, then...then they shall perform all the better. They shall work as a unit, united as they should always be, to save their world and their people.

His hand shifts. To press upon Sleipnir's shoulder, to guide and direct him towards the exit of the race track, where they might find better privacy for this long denied reunion. Not that the blinding halls of light and cacophonous nonsense would serve much better, but it was still a start. The stables would welcome too much scrutiny with its quiet, even if that is what he much prefers. His hand remains upon Sleipnir as they walk, as if tethering them together, betraying a worry he refuses to say: that if he removes his hand, then he may very well cease to be.

He will not suffer such a reality again.]

[Clive does not miss how Dion's gaze flicks to his arm and wonders how much the curse has affected the prince. Clive curbs the spike of anger at a world that would destroy people from so young an age for their own greed. Soon enough, that won't be a problem anymore.]

It's a little bittersweet, isn't it?

Okay, good.

[Clive is a little surprised by his spike of protectiveness over this person he barely knows, but then again, that is kind of what he does. Clive, realizing he is staring, clears his throat and redoubles his focus on the map.]

[ Oh.

No. Now she recognizes the voice. But which one? After him, she can't be sure.

And in truth, Clea does not know which Renoir she hopes for before she opens her eyes: The one that hates her for justifiable reasons or the one that will abandon her. Either way, they will disappoint her, but at least the false one is honest. So when she opens one of her eyes and spots the scar across his face, she lets out the very smallest sound of relief.

Not real. ]

I would respect it if it were vulgar. As you say, you might convey something. This place walks up to the edge of saying something and turns around without committing. It suffers in its attempts to be palatable rather than fully committing to its debauchery.

[ There is the slightest elongation of the final syllable, the only testament to the several drinks Clea's imbibed. It is an interesting discussion, which is why she's answered at all, but he does not desire her company and, as, wherever this is, it is not Verso's Canvas, she has no reason to force the issue, the alcohol in her system putting a blanket over the usual spike of hostility that surfaces when she thinks of her not father.

But why are they here? They are Maman's.]

Are you here on purpose?

[ Did they steal from Maman? ]

Please do not stab me. I'm on the verge of inebriation.

Really? I'll have to check that out! Do you know if they have any Keanu Reeves movies? [Nevermind the tiny voice in his head that keeps reminding him that he's supposed to be here on a mission. Calm down, little Sonic voice, they'll get to that later. This was important too!] Oh, I'm one hundred percent on Team Watch Movies at Home. I mean, the theaters are cool and everything, but you can't get any good running commentary going without someone shushing you every five seconds. Talk about a tough crowd. And no dramatic reenactments either! Just, where's the heart? And the lack of unlimited snacks it's kind of a dealbreaker. You can't even eat chilidogs inside the place! It’s like they don’t want you to have fun. [He wasn't gonna lie, it had been fun going to the movies with Tom and Maddie, but after they tried to bring Knuckles and Tails along, and ended with half a row of seats destroyed, they were practically banned from the local theater. Oh well, their loss.]

[It was rare for Clive to find someone who would watch him so intently when he spoke. Yes, people usually listened when he talked, but this was different. The weight of Verso's gaze was heavy, but not unpleasant. This was someone who was listening to him for him. As Clive, the man, not the leader, or Cid the Outlaw, or Mythos, but Clive.]

I often wonder what it must have been like to know him. There is so much about the man himself that we don't know.

[Clive chuckles.]

I see that you are aiming to be a very dedicated student.

[Clive playfully tweaks Verso's ear.]

I'll have to work hard to live up to my student's expectations.

[It's Clive's turn to give Verso his undivided attention. Once the other man starts speaking, Clive pauses in his ministrations and watches, searching Verso's face as he shares something that Clive is getting the feeling might difficult for him to talk about. He almost asks Verso about how long he has been alive, but thinks better of it just in time for that little comment about being bisected.]

Fun?

[A startled laugh escapes Clive's lips.]

You have an interesting definition of fun, Verso. I can't say I would enjoy seeing you hurt like that.

[It doesn't take long for Cid and Clive to sync up. Clive assumes that it is part of what comes with having spent time on a battlefield together. Being able to easily navigate another person's space while not getting in the way can be a delicate balance.

After a couple of minutes of what Clive considers to be very boring dancing, he moves into Cid's space.]

I'm bored.

[He whispers into Cid's ear. That is the only warning Cid gets before Clive is moving again, tracing a hand across the other man's shoulders and across the back of his neck before doing a pirouette around him, circling him in a full 360.]

And if I'm bored, they're probably bored.

[That small sound is different enough to how one daughter would respond to know she is the other. His mind forms opinions of her speech, connecting sanitised emotions to lacklustre art. But when she slurs and looks ready to slide off her chair, he finds his heart twisting with concern. The feeling is unnatural but at the same time as familiar as the rhythm of his heart.

He continues levelling her with a cold and calculating stare. Even in this world, he must worry about the danger she could pose. Even in this world, where he thought he could rest.]

Would I ever leave her side?

[His voice hovers one octave below anger; tired and disappointed that she is reminding him of his separation from his wife.]

Or do you suppose I would abandon her and get drunk on my own illusions?

[ The dragon first grows more hostile, torn between attacking the dragoon in front of it and the mage whose spells are melting its protective shell. Its focus remains on the former, for each time it tries to jerk in the direction of Vivi, Dion jabs at it to pull its attention back.

When the heat of the fire spells has exposed something red and luminous, the dragon shudders and stills. It begins backing away from both of them, head bent low.

Dion has seen this before. Songs are sung of how many dragons he has tamed, though bards exaggerate. His experience is enough to tell him the dragon has lost its desire to fight them, now that such a vulnerability is unprotected.

For his part, Dion doesn't pursue. The battle is won; surely they needn't fell the creature. He rejoins Vivi, allowing the dragon to distance itself. The ice on its back is already slowly reforming, but it watches them warily, unmoving. ]

It is that.

[ Dion can do naught but agree. Theirs is a world that has seen much suffering centered around magic and those gifted and cursed with its use. If only it were like others, free of such affliction.

But that is one reason they'd fought so hard. One among many that they fight still, in this new and strange realm. ]

[ In a twisted way, there is something comforting in being stared at in such a fashion. There's a brutal honesty to it that almost every other interaction Clea's had since Verso's death lacked. It is comfortable. Expected. The correct response.

She nods. He is correct. Aline would not have painted him as able to leave her. That is the whole point of her false city: A perfect family that will never leave her. Not through death, anger, or any other means. Though Clea had denied her that much. It would never be perfect. ]

It was an inspipid question.

They stole from Maman.

[ There is always room for more anger. The man is not real. He is one of her mother's creations. One that Clea finds twisted. But Maman's nonetheless, and he is not a creation for public viewing. He is a private, personal thing, and for someone to place their claws in Maman's work and rend it so is infuriating. To take her mother's grieving heart and lay it bare.

The answer is enough, and it means she cannot stay. Clea pushes herself into a more proper seated position, then stands with a slight tremor in her legs. One hand remains in contact with the chair longer than strictly necessary, and instead of reaching for the glass of water, Clea's hand wraps around the bottle of wine.

If she drinks the rest quickly, she'll pass the embarrassing stage at the cost of a terrible hangover.

She's not a boor: She pours it into a glass with a surprisingly steady hand and slips the bottle back in her voluminous skirt. She lifts the glass to her lips and drinks the glass in an elegant motion, then refills it and repeats the action before setting the now empty bottle and glass back on the table. She steps forward and puts a hand to her temple, blinking as she's hit with a sudden sensation of nausea.

Aging is a horrific plague.]

Whatever it is, remember they stole from Maman.

[ It's more than she would ordinarily say, a remnant of the unfortunate self that appears only with a very specific level of inebriation is reached. A...warning? Or some expression indicating maybe she is considering his experience. She steps forward, rebalancing. It takes a few mores steps, but she starts to move more confidently towards the exit - if a bit less elegantly than usual. ]

His attention was on the Dominant as the battle seemed to have been won. Vivi isn't sure if they were meant to actually kill the dragon, but at least, for now, it seems like it is injured enough to leave them alone, so the battle seems to be done. [ She shakes her head, though isn't immediately certain how to offer the context he seems to be asking for. After all, accepting that this is a physical reality was only a hop, step, and a jump away from becoming acutely aware that this experience is likely not shared by many. Eventually, after fidgeting with the fork in front of her, she decides. ]

I used to live underground. It isn't easy to grow food there. There are many pig farmers, but I don't think we could cook something like this.

[ It must have a lot of different ingredients. Ones she's never tried before. Some people were very resourceful, knew how to make buzhenina with wild herbs the stalkers brought from the surface. But it was probably radioactive, and it really can't compare with this.

In any case, she's sort of relieved to hear an opinion so forthcoming on the situation they're in. It's clear he's put more thought into it than simply following the path of least resistance. If only it wasn't so confusing. ]

I... see. I hope you are right. I can't decide what I am supposed to feel. It's like anything is possible, so how can I trust the instruction of whoever it is that kidnapped us? But if being here means there is some way I could save the earth... then I have to agree with you. I couldn't say no to that.

She looks at him a little puzzled when he responds to her business comment like it's a new revelation, but ultimately says nothing, tucks the thought away into a back pocket. ]

Oh, I don't know. Apparently our worlds are in jeopardy if we don't worry about that. Can't say I understand the connection between the two even now. Isn't enjoying ourselves pretty much what everyone is already doing?

[ Given the nature of Aphaia's colosseum, Dion doesn't doubt they were meant to slay the dragon. Yet it seems cruel when said dragon has retreated from them. Surely the fact that it has withdrawn means they're the victors, he reasons.

Though perhaps they ought not linger, since it does appear to be recovering. He eyes the dragon for a lingering moment, then returns his attention to the young mage. ]

You are quite the formidable caster. Knowing that allowed me to focus on holding its attention as I did, so I owe you my thanks as well.

Hell of a lot of games, but just a few poised just so like this one. Then of course there's the colosseum and chocobo races, if you're into that sort of fare.

[ Yuri's a fine gambler. It'd be easy enough to take advantage of that experience here, but he does prefer a sure thing over taking his chances. He watches a bot drift their way, only to see it turn and wheel off toward some ruckus in the distance. ]

[ Despite the unfamiliarity of his surroundings, there's one thing Bruce Wayne knows how to do: Mingle. He's light on his feet as he weaves through the crowd, laughing easy in the casual conversations happening around him. It's almost like he's made for this kind of thing for how easy it all seems for him to adjust. But if you knew Bruce — or at least spent any time with him outside of one of these high society soirees, you'd know he's really taking inventory. Gathering intel, gaining his bearings. Learning the lay of the land.

And the second he's got a moment to catch his breath, to stop the performance, he can be found at a table, back to the wall, quiet and observant. He hasn't adhered to the dress code, but he's still dressed smartly, dark colors that make disappearing without being noticed a little easier on him. If you're looking for that friendly guy you were chatting with just moments ago? You've found him. He smiles and gestures to the empty seat across from him. ]
