[It's a good thing that Sho had given her some experience with humans, because it does stop her from immediately trying to run away screaming — something she imagines her mother would have done, nervous a creature she is. But Arrietty has never liked showing weakness in the face of something that could easily kill her, even if her heart is nearly beating out of its chest. She stares up, mortification slipping through her panicked stare, and has to make a choice:

Swallowing hard and pulling her knapsack firmly across her shoulder, she forces herself to move. Inara will find that her steps are as light as a kitten's, as she climbs up onto her palm. She stays sitting, making sure that she's stable and won't go tumbling out of Inara's hand. The woman is clearly beautiful, the kind of beauty that Arrietty isn't very used to; it makes her admittedly a little disarmed, as much as she reminds herself that such things isn't a sign of goodness.]
