TDM 008

content warnings for this TDM include: gambling references, mild horror themes and suggestive content

⏵ arrival⏴

Arrival does not happen as Aurora usually plans for it. Newcomers generally find themselves waking up within the hospital, are given a brief overview of their situation, and sent on their way. Now? They wake up immersed in a game within The Gold Saucer. But it doesn't quite feel like a game: whether it's snowy mountains, riding a chocobo as you listened to the wind quickly pass by your ears, or in the middle of a battle with a beast, it feels utterly real.

It's only after the game concludes - either by winning or losing - that you find yourself back in the main game area. A bot, dressed as personnel in this lavish playground, approaches each arrival with an earpiece allowing them to communicate with those in their same situation. It also serves to inform them of their goal: collect enough gold saucer points (or GP) by playing the games to acquire a card fashioned to their own likeness from the game counter. Then, they must trade it for someone else's. Seems simple enough, right? Hopefully the cards aren't too expensive...

⏵ the gold saucer ⏴

The Gold Saucer is an ode to the very idea of fun. It’s huge, labyrinthine, colorful, and lively. Everywhere you look, there’s something to do. At the same time, it’s also impossible to tell what time it is. There are no windows to the outside, there are no clocks. This place is beyond such a thing.

There are games everywhere you look, ranging from the pseudo-gambling to sports to pixelated video games in cabinets. Yet no matter which boxing game, pinball machine, or skeeball machine you look at, the same creatures and themes arrive. Cactuars, chocobos, the fiercest Behemoth, the cuddliest Moogle… For those from the realms of Final Fantasy, this will feel natural- homey even. Everyone else will simply understand that there is a fairly strong central theme here about magic, machines, and monsters.

It’s hard to tell how long you spend here, and it seems to sit outside of the very concept of time. Still, there are many restaurants, lounges, and vending machines. There are shops and costume rentals. There are even little pharmacies with headache remedies if the partying gets out of hand. And when you grow tired, there is a hotel- though it is made up like a haunted house, you can count on getting some semi-restful sleep.

⏵ playtime ⏴
Interdimensional Games

At first, stepping through to play any of these games may make participants wonder if they have been teleported somewhere else entirely. But on closer inspection, all the skies above are merely well-constructed interiors with painted ceilings. After all, it always seems to be daytime during these games.

Snowboarding - Race to the bottom of the mountain, but avoid obstacles and complete as many tricks as possible!

Chocobo Racing- Race on Chocobo-back around a treacherous outdoors race track which can either be taking place in a desert, a swampy forest, or upon an island beach. Work in tandem with your rented bird and against your competition by throwing hazards in their way or utilizing buffs garnered on the track. Different colored birds will yield different advantages.

Yellow - Good All Rounder
Red - Fast, but hard to steer
Blue - Slower, but very easy to steer. Much easier to pick up items from them.
Green- Resilient against traps and sabotage

Colosseum Battle- Face off against the fiercest beasts around. Pair up with friends or rivals to Collaborate or Compete to do the most damage and deliver the final blow. These battles are synced to the comparative power of the one entering the competition.

We wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt unnecessarily, after all. And indeed, no one will get seriously, gruesomely, or permanently injured in these battles. Those without fighting capabilities can rent weapons outfitted Materia to assist them in their trial. These will allow anyone to cast spells, though not guarantee any better wielding of weapons. There are a hundred rounds, starting with fairly simple Spriggans, ranging all the way up to blood-thirsty Behemoths to challenge even the most battle-hardened hero.

Gold Saucer Games

Leap of Faith- Players are presented with an obstacle course that stretches a hundred feet into the air upon floating platforms and islands. Both are held aloft by magical crystals. Powers are entirely nerfed, though falling and hitting the ground is strangely painless. Those who collect the most silver and gold statuettes of cactuars placed at random throughout the course will be awarded proportionate GP; though there is a bonus for those that reach the very top first.

Triple Triad- Everywhere you look, people are playing this game on little 3 by 3 boards, or any surface with enough space. You will be given a loaner deck to play with. Are you clever enough to defeat your fellows.

Fashion Report- Theobold, familiar to some, stands by himself in a little booth with a dressing room and an incredibly expansive walk-in closet. He is a robot of distinguished fashion and strong opinions on those fashions. Do you dare subject yourself to his scrutiny? Come prepare in his wondrous closets to make the best outfit for the chance to win a prize. Please submit your fashion here!

There are Arcade Machines and activities galore. If you can think of it, it’s probably there- Just with that Final Fantasy pastiche on it, of course.

⏵ the beehive lounge ⏴

There are other places to eat at the Gold Saucer, but the vending machines and cafés all pale in comparison to the dinners at the Beehive.

For all the rave reviews, there is a dress code at the Beehive, and this is literal. If you step inside and are not currently wearing a dress, you will be ushered into a sideroom and appropriately made over.

However, this is only for those trying to go in through the normal doors. Around the side there happens to be an employee entrance, manned by a bot. He will only allow those in who seem like they intend to work— and therefore must be wearing at least one piece of the Bunnysuit Collection to trick the guard.

Once you are made over or have snuck in, you are free to relax inside with drinks, dine on a fine meal, watch the dancers, or participate yourself if you feel brave enough. Why would anyone ever dance here? Well, that’s simple. It pays really well. So if you’re sick of games, or terrible at them— you can always come dance for a shift. Though, don't get any unseemly ideas about freeing yourself of your clothing, this isn't that kind of establishment!

⏵ haunted house ⏴

When you grow too weary or drunk from a day of games, you may be directed to somewhere a little quieter to sleep. Up the elevator, and through the doors reveals a modest walk through some woods until a quaint, victorian hotel appears. It is always nighttime here, and the stars and moon twinkle above.

The receptionist, a bot in a rather bedraggled-looking chocobo mascot costume checks you in and shows you to your room. You can sleep here, especially if you can tolerate the hokey haunted decorations strung up around the place. Though sometimes, late at night, there will come a vigorous thumping on the door to startle sleeping patrons awake- Only for the culprit to vanish and be impossible to locate.

⏵ ticket counter ⏴

The prize counter is manned by a bot and has a sign posted overhead. Most prizes will be handed over inside an appropriately sized wrapped box, as the contents are a mystery.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

This TDM may be treated as a mini-Mission. Time will not pass inside of it in relation to the world outside - meaning, this can be happening at any time between late May into early July!

This Gold Saucer is a bit of a mix between that of FF7's and FF14's, but it also has some things that neither have as well. Any inaccuracies are entirely intentional, aimed to make this rest within a space of uncanny valley for those who are familiar. While otherwise being a bit of a chaotic fantastical funhouse for everyone else! If there is something unlisted, chances are it will exist if it is in either of the other versions of the Gold Saucer.

Characters already in game are welcome to post to the TDM, too! Please mark them as current characters in your header. Threads can be kept as game canon as long as both characters get into the game!

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

( What is with the jungle mutant anemone from the pits of hell? There's no real point to asking, but she's not a silent fighter. Megumi may or may not catch tidbits as exciting as: go back to the pit you crawled out of, please don't whip your eyes around like that, and if I had a diamond for every tentacle on that thing... I'm not even sure how many I'd have.

When one fights energy constructs for a living and needs to have good communication with whomever she's partnering with at the time, it can get into the mundane, not so useful, and not entirely aware, commentary. Her shift in tone and volume marks when she has something important to communicate, like right now:
)

I'm going in close to pull it's attention on me! If it works, lay in as hard as you can!

( The lightning's been great, but she doesn't know if it has inherent limits because summoning as a whole is outside her field of expertise. What is in her field is the rush of adrenaline that pulses with the beat of her heart as she bolts closer, dodging to the side and shooting errant tentacles starting to coordinate in her direction.

Alex gets off a few good shots into the core body of the anemone of the darkness, the darkness, only to see it convulse and open its gaping maw even wider, coughing up... another gas? It looks different from before.

She turns and books it, and the beast attempts to lumber after her, spilling the non-noxious, unknown properties gas like frothing milk out of a cup as it goes.

I know what a robot is! [He folds his arms across his chest, slightly annoyed that Mr. Robot here called his planet primitive. He's not used to others thinking that he's from an ancient world or whatever. Usually it's the other way around--] You're just different from all the other ones I've seen around here.

[He's definitely different from those companion bots that he sees all over Etraya. For one, he's less chipper and honestly kind of rude. But whatever.]

So, you're investigating the noise too? [Guess there goes his initial assumption.] It's really annoying, can't even sleep.

Do you want me to pretend you died?

[ It would be nice if Alex suffered that fall without an audience. Unfortunately, she didn't, but fortunately, Gorgug can understand wanting life to go that way and is offering her the opportunity anyway. He's standing without having crashed into any ropes, which is pretty cool, covered head to toe in all the proper snowgear that only shows the bottom of his jaw. Green skin, a pair of tusks poking out from his mouth, and with a height reaching nearly seven feet, he has himself nearly prepared to start off, but, you know...

He's also kind of making sure that person didn't knock themself out? we're helping ]

( She blinks up at the world, considering what this unfamiliar voice is offering. Then she moves her head to track down who's speaking, the looming figure (everyone at present is looming, it figures) better dressed for this weather than she is. Her present angle also gives her a poor look at his face. She lifts a hand and gives him a thumbs up, regardless. )

No, no thank you. Then I'd have to play dead for longer, and it's cold. I didn't dress for snowboarding!

( Alex is factually letting herself whine, just enough good humor likewise in her voice that when she manages to roll onto her stomach and start crawling out from under the ropes, she can sit back up, brush the snow off herself, and smile. And look up. And up. And you know, she's used to tall people, but they usually hit maximum at something just over six feet, and oh she almost tips backward at first trying to look him in the face. Also, is he green? Also, are those teeth modifications?

Not that it matters either way, and it's not even as confusing as being here in the first place, so the question rolls around unaddressed in her head.
)

And I would have scheduled a snowboard instructor! Instead of just... going.

( Probably. She shifts, pressing down on the compacted snow with one fist and her free booted foot, just to rise. Truly impressive at a whopping almost 163 cm, she does not feel any less short when she's standing. )

You are incredibly tall. If I slide into a drift and get swallowed by the snow, could you help point me out to the rescuers?

( She grins, mostly joking, and nods her head... up... at him. Okay, she feels that stretch. )

Alexandra Won. Please feel free to just call me Alex.

[ As Alex has to look up (and up, and up, and up), Gorgug peers down, his eyewear hiding the inverted colour scheme going on behind them. There's a cool tint to the piece, which is the only "cool" part of his entire outfit, unless chocobo-yellow is your thing.

Gorgug did not get to pick. But he also didn't fall on his butt, so small victories(?). ]

Um, Gorgug, [ he offers back for the name, and there's--stuff there he should address, right? But there's a hint of confusion, and he looks down the slope waiting for them before looking back to Alex. The shades are kinda making his vision funky.. ] You don't know you're in a game? Or are you-- is that a joke...

[ Wait, oh, maybe that was a joke. Do snowboard games have rescuers? Probably, actually. For most places--the kind that Gorgug never expects to show up at. ]

[His mind had already to wander a little bit, about what he should be doing next, what games should he try-- he was sure he heard something about a racing one. He had an immediate goal to reach, and he was also easily distracted. Well, for someone as fast as him, it surely wouldn't be a problem to get all the necessary tickets in record time. Though he was also starting to get a little hungry, hm.

He was a little startled when he heard Shadow's voice. It took him a second to process his question, tilting his head a little.]

Chocobo Racing

[personal profile] reincarnesiac 2025-06-10 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I said I ride motorcycles, not oversized ostriches!

( Thus arrives Alex, holding the numbered tunic she's supposed to be wearing as a last minute sub-in on a chocobo the owner is less concerned about having win and more concerned about having disqualified. The chocobo she's supposed to ride is unremarkable: a nice yellow neither too strong nor too weak in coloration, side stepping as the groom gives both the bird and the young woman being paid as a interim jockey the same pained look. )

What? It's a whole different skill-set! Plus the motorcycle goes faster...

( The groom looks at her. Looks at the mounting block. Gestures, and Alex grimaces before she sighs and gives up on her protesting. At least she's getting paid in GP regardless of winning. (She hates knowing she's at a disadvantage for winning. It rubs against her competitive spirit, but she can admit, there are always sensible mitigating factors, and inexperience with giant ostriches is one of them.)

In her jockey shirt and settled in the saddle, she takes hold of the reins and makes absolutely sure not to pull back on them. Horses are sensitive to that. She's heard that! Maybe giant birds are as well?

Conceptually, the set-up for racing here reminders her of the horse races she's seen once or twice on television. A line of boxes like what she's led into, a whole bunch of other large birds and definitely more experienced riders perched on their backs. Along with the sudden opening of the gates —

...

...

...
)

Shouldn't we... go?

( Her chocobo, which had decided not to leave at the shot fired with the rest of the rushing flock, hears her speak and gives a start. Then it bobs its massive head and bolts out onto the racetrack, Alex ducking down and coming just shy of trying to cling to the bird's neck to not fly off backward. Instead she has one hand holding the reins, the other gripping the saddle in front of her, and her legs clamped so tight she's going to get cramps if she isn't careful, or this race continues on too long.

Starting from so far back would be disheartening for some birds, but apparently not hers, who stretches out its neck, lowers its body, and appears to lengthen each stride catching up with the birds ahead. In the end, the bird decides to trail after a number of birds in succession: Alex, for her part, ends up batting away one beak that tries to take a nip at her leg, otherwise giving her bird its head. She doesn't know better how to steer this thing!

Which may be why, after the first turn and coming up on the second, her bird launches over two birds who's sniping has turned into a full body check sending them suddenly rushing out towards the outside edge of the track. Then the chocobo cuts a hard line in through and opening and is, against all logic and definitely not due to any skill of her own beyond the one that has kept her on the blasted bird, racing close behind Barnabas's mount.
)

[ There has been a lot of new things happening today and while others may get overwhelmed by such things this is not the case for one Sleipnir Harbard. This excess of lights and luxury is... interesting. Some of it even entertaining. He's been slipping in and out of areas throughout this place and while he hasn't located the exit yet he is certain it'll crop up sometime.

Another new thing is this Beehive without insects where the price of entry being a gift of clothing. Who ever heard of a cost being a gift? It charmed him a little. Of course he would accept such fine fabrics to go dine.

Which is how we find Sleipnir dressed in layers of pink and white frills, ruffles, and lace. It isn't the type of outfit he wants to get blood on, but at least the dress is poofy with a petticoat which enables easy movement of his legs if he needs to get down to it.

It seems to be a busy time for the establishment; there isn't a lot of open tables to sit at. Sleipnir's eyes scan the dimly lit room till they land on someone he finds tolerable. The dark purple lady... no, man. Lady? Man. Hm. Doesn't matter, the beauty with the purple hair seems most like they don't wish to be bothered. Which either means they'll be fun or they'll be quiet; both of which work for him.

So, Sleipnir makes his way across the room and slides a lace-gloved hand on the back of the chair across from the afore mentioned beauty. ]

Pardon me, but would you allow me the pleasure of dining with you? That confection looks rather divine.

( Alex looks even more perplexed. )

A game? We're in VR right now?

( This is... not exactly how VR feels back home, but there... was whatever was going on with those cocoons people were being put in for the Fountain of Atei project... and whatever was injected, in theory, weren't they also being entertained? She regrets not asking for a moment, but the whole memory of what was being done to people, the end result of those who'd been turned into something no longer human or even self aware, and that happening to the journalist she'd looked up to... no. Protocore Syndrome was a horrible disease, but turning that corner into either making people monsters or giving them monstrous capability was...

She rubs at her forehead, her heart aching in remembered pain.
)

Okay, no, I didn't hear anything about a game. I was at home, staring out my window, and then I blinked and I was here.

( She drops her hand away from her face and gestures to the great.......... ski run they're on, really, and people milling here and there before either going down the mountain or cutting across snow toward one of the lifts taking people to the more challenging runs. )

I figured maybe I was dreaming, but it's too... clear. So... ... ... we're in a game?

( How??? )

[This is him we're talking about. The probability of ending up getting hit in the face was one of his life's constants.]

Yeah, because acting like an unhinged sociopath would greatly improve my situation.

[Maybe he was onto something before you so rudely interrupted. Have you thought of that. Anyway, he didn't plan on following. He already knows you're not the Shadow he knows. Although that does raise several questions, and had given him only one, cryptic, sort-of answer about his situation in return. He can still find more answers in a less violent manner.]

I see...

[A hospital, a greeting - more of an explanation as well, most likely. And of course, one mustn't discount the importance of snacks, or so Joshua's heard, anyway. Not his fault he eats like a bird.]

Why, then, is it so common to arrive elsewhere in the middle of a mission? Is the process truly so haphazard? Or is it, perhaps, another form of test in and of itself?

[ It is getting pretty late- or is it?- by the time Sleipnir finally lays eyes on his king. Gentle relief fills him; if Barnabas is here then all is as it is meant to be. Sleipnir has spent the entire day meandering around this strange flashy building in an attempt to find the exit, yet he has been unable to. Even the shadows won't take him out of here. He hasn't been stressed by the situation he finds himself in, rather more curious as it has been a long while since he has seen something new. Still, it is a relief to lay eyes on Barnabas Tharmr. It always is.

It is also is a relief Sleipnir saw him first; he slowly reaches up and takes the horse ears he had won off of his head and tucks them inside his outfit before approaching. ]

Ha.

[Though there was no amusement in his voice, there was certainly a twinkle in Clive’s eyes.]

I need to practice wearing these shoes first.

[Clive looks at the high heels in the package. It was a marvel that people could walk in these, let alone dance. But Cid had said he just had the shoes. Maybe he could help.]

Any pointers?

[Clive keeps pace, shaking his head.]

I’d rather not walk across the entire club to store my things. It’s easier to go in the back.

[That and the people there are going to get a good enough show in a couple of hous anyway.]

That sounds like a situation I would rather avoid.

[Clive holds the employee’s only door to the club open for Cid.]

[Clive’s life would have been so different if Dominants hadn’t existed. All of theirs would. Maybe he would have even - No. Now was not the time and this was not the place to fall into a cycle of childhood what-ifs. Clive finally looks back at Dion.]

You’re pretty straight forward, aren’t you?

[Clive nods.]

That’s the goal. Our world has had enough of Bearers, Dominants, and magic. It’s long passed time for something new.

[Clive pauses for a moment, staring at the man across from him.]

Thank you. For helping us.
herofhopeless: (determined)

[personal profile] herofhopeless 2025-06-10 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. We’ll have to see if we end up in the usual place rather than these in-between ones.

[Because that is what they feel like. Little pockets of in-between where existence doesn’t feel quite real. It feels more like when you wake from a dream and can’t quite shake the dregs.

[Clive has to remind himself to breathe while he waits for Joshua to decide what is appropriate to tell him. He trusts that, whatever he hears, it will be the truth. For better or worse, he also knows that Joshua will shield him from anything that might be too much. Clive feels a small pang. Oh how he wished he could have witnessed Joshua growing into the man he is today.]

Ultima made us.

[The thought turns Clive’s stomach, but the reassuring squeeze from Joshua’s hand chases away some of the dark. Were the situation not so serious, Clive might smile at Joshua’s reassuring squeeze. As if sensing his thoughts, Clive speaks:]

Ultima will never separate us again. Not if I can help it.

[Hearing about Ultima’s deceit and lies is unsurprising. How very human for Ultima to keep questing for more power at the expense of others. Hearing that even a so-called god was full of flaws gives Clive more confidence in their ability to succeed both here and at home.]

[But just as his mind is getting used to the idea of what they are working for, Joshua’s last comments fully register. Reflexively, his hand tightens around the one in his own.]

Why… How…

[Clive stops and takes a slow, deep breath.]

Even if that were true, Barnabas doesn’t listen. Who's to say he would even believe us if we told him his god and everything he learned and believed in is a lie?

[The power this woman weilds is truly incredible. Clive is certain if Joshua, or even Harpocrates, were here they would want to know everything about what she can do. Clive is curious enough on his own. Certainly, the old lore master back home would love to hear about this.

As his partner lands, Clive walks towards her to meet in the middle, just before the door. As he walks, his eyes change back from a glowing blue to his usual deep blue shade. The flames shrouding him fade, leaving ethereal blue sparkles shimmering and dissipating in the air behind him. His body shifts back to what it was and when he reaches her and speaks, his voice is normal once more.]

Your guess is as good as mine on that count. Maybe Aurora thinks some of us more adaptable than others, or maybe this whole system's less refined than we might like.

So can anyone learn magic? Even if they don’t have the aptitude for it?

[Clive looks up at Yuri, the light from his magic and his own amazement bringing a brightness to Clive’s eyes.]

And it is all your own. The people from your home, are they feared for their abilities?

Pain.

[Not the most helpful, he knows.]

The closer you can get the damage to its center, the more it does. Which usually means getting close to its mouth.

[Speaking of, Clive does a quick dash, leaving flames in his wake, to get a flurry of blows, both with his sword and his flames, in and around its mouth before spinning back out of the way. The stench roiling off of the thing sticks to the back of his throat and he grimaces.]

Manifest?

[Clive notices the all-to-familiar build up to the creature’s fetid breath and dodges behind it. In a flash of light, pale, scaled wings burst from his back. He flaps them once and orbs of light fly forward to swirl around the creature, causing it to stagger and slow it’s disgusting onslaught. Just as quickly as they were there, the wings are gone and Clive is back on the ground.]

Yeah. These guys are real charmers. It’ll dissipate. Just stay out of the cloud while its here. And shoot it in the mouth.

[ Yuri knows when someone is approaching without having to look. It's the result of a rough life and the kind of work a man finds when absent options. He doesn't react immediately until he's spoken to, and then he spares a good moment to turn and verify what he already knew: the place is packed.

So he shrugs, a short, sharp roll of his shoulders. ]

They've got more on that buffet table to your left.

[ It's sweeter than he's quite accustomed to. He has never entirely adjusted between what other worlds can provide him and what he can make for himself. Having this all the time feels too much somehow, and he doesn't want to accustom himself to anything his world can't provide.

Might as well now and then though. Just like he might as well use his borrowed boots to nudge an empty chair out for the guy. There are, after all, no more immediate and viable options unless he opts to perch on someone's table. Not that that wouldn't be entertaining. ]

Chair's free, you may as well.

[ On Gorgug's approach, Yuri cannot help but lock eyes with his very expressive hat. They certainly don't make them like that back home, and he has his doubts they ever will. Did he choose exciting hat life, or did it choose him?

The question makes his eyes tick back to Gorgug's face, and so the mystery remains. ]

Yeah, I passed it earlier. What about you?

[ He isn't sure whether he wants to assume Gorgug's hat is something they give away as a prize here. Averse to surplus attention as he is, it strikes him as more punishment than reward. Gorgug doesn't seem particularly enchanted by it either. ]
