TDM 008

content warnings for this TDM include: gambling references, mild horror themes and suggestive content

⏵ arrival⏴

Arrival does not happen as Aurora usually plans for it. Newcomers generally find themselves waking up within the hospital, are given a brief overview of their situation, and sent on their way. Now? They wake up immersed in a game within The Gold Saucer. But it doesn't quite feel like a game: whether it's snowy mountains, riding a chocobo as you listened to the wind quickly pass by your ears, or in the middle of a battle with a beast, it feels utterly real.

It's only after the game concludes - either by winning or losing - that you find yourself back in the main game area. A bot, dressed as personnel in this lavish playground, approaches each arrival with an earpiece allowing them to communicate with those in their same situation. It also serves to inform them of their goal: collect enough gold saucer points (or GP) by playing the games to acquire a card fashioned to their own likeness from the game counter. Then, they must trade it for someone else's. Seems simple enough, right? Hopefully the cards aren't too expensive...

⏵ the gold saucer ⏴

The Gold Saucer is an ode to the very idea of fun. It’s huge, labyrinthine, colorful, and lively. Everywhere you look, there’s something to do. At the same time, it’s also impossible to tell what time it is. There are no windows to the outside, there are no clocks. This place is beyond such a thing.

There are games everywhere you look, ranging from the pseudo-gambling to sports to pixelated video games in cabinets. Yet no matter which boxing game, pinball machine, or skeeball machine you look at, the same creatures and themes arrive. Cactuars, chocobos, the fiercest Behemoth, the cuddliest Moogle… For those from the realms of Final Fantasy, this will feel natural- homey even. Everyone else will simply understand that there is a fairly strong central theme here about magic, machines, and monsters.

It’s hard to tell how long you spend here, and it seems to sit outside of the very concept of time. Still, there are many restaurants, lounges, and vending machines. There are shops and costume rentals. There are even little pharmacies with headache remedies if the partying gets out of hand. And when you grow tired, there is a hotel- though it is made up like a haunted house, you can count on getting some semi-restful sleep.

⏵ playtime ⏴
Interdimensional Games

At first, stepping through to play any of these games may make participants wonder if they have been teleported somewhere else entirely. But on closer inspection, all the skies above are merely well-constructed interiors with painted ceilings. After all, it always seems to be daytime during these games.

Snowboarding - Race to the bottom of the mountain, but avoid obstacles and complete as many tricks as possible!

Chocobo Racing- Race on Chocobo-back around a treacherous outdoors race track which can either be taking place in a desert, a swampy forest, or upon an island beach. Work in tandem with your rented bird and against your competition by throwing hazards in their way or utilizing buffs garnered on the track. Different colored birds will yield different advantages.

Yellow - Good All Rounder
Red - Fast, but hard to steer
Blue - Slower, but very easy to steer. Much easier to pick up items from them.
Green- Resilient against traps and sabotage

Colosseum Battle- Face off against the fiercest beasts around. Pair up with friends or rivals to Collaborate or Compete to do the most damage and deliver the final blow. These battles are synced to the comparative power of the one entering the competition.

We wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt unnecessarily, after all. And indeed, no one will get seriously, gruesomely, or permanently injured in these battles. Those without fighting capabilities can rent weapons outfitted Materia to assist them in their trial. These will allow anyone to cast spells, though not guarantee any better wielding of weapons. There are a hundred rounds, starting with fairly simple Spriggans, ranging all the way up to blood-thirsty Behemoths to challenge even the most battle-hardened hero.

Gold Saucer Games

Leap of Faith- Players are presented with an obstacle course that stretches a hundred feet into the air upon floating platforms and islands. Both are held aloft by magical crystals. Powers are entirely nerfed, though falling and hitting the ground is strangely painless. Those who collect the most silver and gold statuettes of cactuars placed at random throughout the course will be awarded proportionate GP; though there is a bonus for those that reach the very top first.

Triple Triad- Everywhere you look, people are playing this game on little 3 by 3 boards, or any surface with enough space. You will be given a loaner deck to play with. Are you clever enough to defeat your fellows.

Fashion Report- Theobold, familiar to some, stands by himself in a little booth with a dressing room and an incredibly expansive walk-in closet. He is a robot of distinguished fashion and strong opinions on those fashions. Do you dare subject yourself to his scrutiny? Come prepare in his wondrous closets to make the best outfit for the chance to win a prize. Please submit your fashion here!

There are Arcade Machines and activities galore. If you can think of it, it’s probably there- Just with that Final Fantasy pastiche on it, of course.

⏵ the beehive lounge ⏴

There are other places to eat at the Gold Saucer, but the vending machines and cafés all pale in comparison to the dinners at the Beehive.

For all the rave reviews, there is a dress code at the Beehive, and this is literal. If you step inside and are not currently wearing a dress, you will be ushered into a sideroom and appropriately made over.

However, this is only for those trying to go in through the normal doors. Around the side there happens to be an employee entrance, manned by a bot. He will only allow those in who seem like they intend to work— and therefore must be wearing at least one piece of the Bunnysuit Collection to trick the guard.

Once you are made over or have snuck in, you are free to relax inside with drinks, dine on a fine meal, watch the dancers, or participate yourself if you feel brave enough. Why would anyone ever dance here? Well, that’s simple. It pays really well. So if you’re sick of games, or terrible at them— you can always come dance for a shift. Though, don't get any unseemly ideas about freeing yourself of your clothing, this isn't that kind of establishment!

⏵ haunted house ⏴

When you grow too weary or drunk from a day of games, you may be directed to somewhere a little quieter to sleep. Up the elevator, and through the doors reveals a modest walk through some woods until a quaint, victorian hotel appears. It is always nighttime here, and the stars and moon twinkle above.

The receptionist, a bot in a rather bedraggled-looking chocobo mascot costume checks you in and shows you to your room. You can sleep here, especially if you can tolerate the hokey haunted decorations strung up around the place. Though sometimes, late at night, there will come a vigorous thumping on the door to startle sleeping patrons awake- Only for the culprit to vanish and be impossible to locate.

⏵ ticket counter ⏴

The prize counter is manned by a bot and has a sign posted overhead. Most prizes will be handed over inside an appropriately sized wrapped box, as the contents are a mystery.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

This TDM may be treated as a mini-Mission. Time will not pass inside of it in relation to the world outside - meaning, this can be happening at any time between late May into early July!

This Gold Saucer is a bit of a mix between that of FF7's and FF14's, but it also has some things that neither have as well. Any inaccuracies are entirely intentional, aimed to make this rest within a space of uncanny valley for those who are familiar. While otherwise being a bit of a chaotic fantastical funhouse for everyone else! If there is something unlisted, chances are it will exist if it is in either of the other versions of the Gold Saucer.

Characters already in game are welcome to post to the TDM, too! Please mark them as current characters in your header. Threads can be kept as game canon as long as both characters get into the game!

Please direct all questions to our mod queries comment!

[Very well - if this man wants to tackle the practical first, that's fine by Joshua.

Akadaemia, Emet-Selch says, perhaps confirming what Joshua had thought regarding this Convocation of his. Joshua's head tilts.]

Phantomology? I have studied much, but never have I encountered such a discipline in all my readings. What is it?

[Emet-Selch is right, but Joshua isn't one to simply dismiss things he doesn't yet understand.]

Herself, I believe.

[It's an idle correction, not one that Joshua has any particular opinion about.]

And yet, I cannot help but notice that you are still here, despite how you appear to dislike the place.

[This, too, is in a mild tone, if one with a bit of cheeky amusement around the edges.]

It would be folly to take such a needless risk for aught so insignificant. Not that I believe all social form should be fully abandoned without care nor consideration, but all the same...

[He's ever a man of principle, but when it comes to saving his world? His people? Well, there's nothing he wouldn't do...

The thought weighs on him a moment, and his demeanor shifts slightly. His mind going to the information he was told by Azem's familiar, about the future he is supposed to live... of what he's supposed to inevitably become. His mouth pulls into a tight line, his brow furrowing behind his mask.]

One should not abandon their convictions, at the very least.

Natural talent then, from the sound of it.

[ Dion minds the pace of his strides, careful not to make Vivi hurry after him as they make their way toward the doors. He needn't make it difficult for the young mage to keep up. ]

I hope you don't mind me inquiring. Where I hail from, if one can use magic, it's a single element.

[ Generally speaking, that is. He thinks it best to stick with that, rather than overcomplicate his explanation. ]

[ He sees her, a familiar face in a sea of strangers and Bruce excuses himself with the ease and grace of a man who's been at this for maybe far longer than any normal person. Bruce weaves in and out of the crowd and slides into Barbara's presence. He makes himself impossible to miss. ]

Let me get you a drink.

[ A quiet invitation to walk with him. ]

[He tilts his head at the other's question. It is vague that he isn't immediately sure what he was referring to. But, the other did give visual cue. The way they were looking him over after the world returned to normalcy. Not too far off the way the scientist would look when he did something new and strange.]

I just...manipulated the flow of time and space. I don't know how to explain it, I just learned I could do it one day. [Came to him rather naturally actually, not long after he landed on Earth. ] I thought you had the same ability...? I've seen you teleport before.
theknightshift: (067)

[personal profile] theknightshift 2025-06-26 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
[ Despite the costume, Bruce knows exactly who he is looking at and he appreciates the familiar face. He turns to look at Jason before he graciously bows out of the conversation he's barely paying attention to, to give him his full attention. ]

So did you, apparently.

[ Nice ears, Jason. ]

[ All very excellent questions. Some of which Bruce has himself. ]

I'm not going to be much help there. Maybe one of the bots can help you.

Indeed I am.

[His voice becoming more nasally with his clear annoyance, though it is less with Joshua and more with the fact he cannot simply teleport away from this place. The correction is noted, though it makes him wonder about Echo and Aurora both, and their full relation to one another. The nature of them both, and this situation they're all trapped in.

He doesn't let his mind linger too long upon it, however, because the question fo phantomology still hangs in the air, and Emet-Selch figures that perhaps it would be best to demonstrate.]

For your question on phantomology, it is the study and understanding of arcane entities, which further expands our discipline and ability to create.

[And to demonstrate this, Emet-Selch raises his hand and snaps his fingers. The sound of it is louder than it should be, but with it does aether charge through the area, manifesting with shimmering light as it bursts in the spot next to him, and a beastly entity decorated in silks and a saddle forms into existence. Its white eyes starin at Joshua, though the best doesn't make any move to attack, it merely stands there obediently and still, but very much alive.

Or seeming so, at least. Emet-Selch moves on, acting casual, like he didn't just form an entire creature out of thin air.]

This area of study is overseen by the Words of Lahabrea, thus Lahabrea himself—another member o the Convocation of Fourteen. Are you following?

What merit would there be in casting aside all of oneself, after all?

[ If they're selected to prove the worthiness of their world, their values matter. What speaks to their world and its virtues must bear weight. He couldn't begin to guess by what measure their world could be evaluated through individuals brought here if none of their values or beliefs were to be factored in. ]

But there are those here who fight among themselves. For petty immediacy, their worlds may suffer...

[ Here he sighs, unable to help but worry for those realms he does not even know. ]

An enemy I've fought since my youth is here. It was never in question that this should be set aside in favor of prioritizing our world's safety.

[ They had both wished to save their world, according to Clive. The difference here is that, for once, there is but one method. ]

There might be a time where such a sacrifice must be made, but one mustn't buckle too quick. What have you to barter after that, if you've naught left to give?

[Enduring is as important as sacrificing, he thinks. One must endure, find ways to keep going, and hold tight to your convictions. You will not save anyone otherwise...]

You and your old foe are wise, then. Such petty grievances can wait when a far greater threat looms over us all. Perhaps those fools in which you speak of might yet realize this fact. Or they may very well need a hand to guide them.

[His hand, he means. If he has to round up these ridiculous creations, then so be it...]

I guess. Oh? Really? I can use different elements, though mine are usually offensive spells. Garnet and Eiko are better at restorative spells and summons.

[Vivi tries to explain. He's not sure he is the best one to do so, but. He does his best. It sounds like magic might be a little different for Dion, at least back home in his situation. Vivi can't help being curious as he considers that. It sounds more limiting. Though he suspects, such a focus on one particular element would probably mean a greater command of it. Greater control.]

Perhaps they do. I couldn't conscience endangering my home in favor of squabbling with others.

[ Emet-Selch gets it! Part of Dion is relieved for that agreement in the wake of Jayce saying a dozen or so of their number had been willing to engage in in-fighting despite the circumstances. He'd acted as though it was Dion who was peculiar for finding such behavior ludicrous.

He knows himself to be greatly affected by his emotions, but there are limits. Why spite others in this place if it may count against their world when whatever undefined judgement comes? ]

Anyone's home, for that matter. We are so few compared to the populations of worlds.

Two moons?

[The concern fully wins out, now, as Joshua leans forward slightly.]

Since Aphaia? But...how can that be? I remember nothing between that place and this one. I had assumed Aurora had simply displaced us once more, but if what you say is true, then...perhaps it is only I who was displaced. Not only in space, but in time. But why? What purpose would it serve to tip the scales of our temporal incongruity so far in the opposite direction? Unless...

[Joshua falls silent for a moment, thinking.]

Well, perhaps I am getting a bit ahead of myself. It wouldn't do to speculate when I know nothing of what you have experienced these past two moons. Might I ask you to tell me a tale, this time?

[ Then Joshua does recall Aphaia. Tension drains from Dion for that simple confirmation, slacking the tense line of his shoulders. He had purposefully avoided specifying anything but the passage of time, unable to know what Joshua would or would not remember. How he responded to those words would have told him what he needed to know.

It would have told him what he might then need to inform Joshua of, for it would have been a grave disservice to him not to ensure he was on the same page. ]

It may not be so riveting a tale as yours was, of course.

[ He begins with this, a faint slant to his lips suggesting humor. ]

From Aphaia, a portal brought me to Etraya. Our host's world, where all were to return. However, I could neither sense nor find you. None I spoke with had met anyone who matched your description, and I was never notified of this having changed.

[ Because it simply had not, it seems. ]

I feared that perhaps, without intention, I'd left you behind. [ The weight of his tone suggests what he could not put to words: he'd debated whether he'd unwittingly left Joshua to meet his demise on Aphaia.] There were those who suggested you were returned to our world, to...whatever awaited you there.

[ He trails off there, looking down at his hands. It's necessary, telling him this. Lacking any gift for guile, there's no use in omission. Joshua would doubtless gauge that there was something unsaid, observant as he is. ]

The same people maintained that you might return, but perhaps from some other point in time. It couldn't be predicted, regardless... [ He drags his focus back to Joshua's face. ] It was...more uncertainty than I should like.

[ An understatement, to be certain. Dion takes pause there, unaccustomed as he is to having cause to say quite so much. That isn't even the half of it, what with that strange mission with its cursed little shorts. ]

Summons?

[ He echoes the word curiously. In his world, he is the summon, not that it's termed as such. ]

I know others who can heal. I've made some attempts, but never trained in that discipline.

[ When they reach the doors, he nudges one open, stepping aside and holding it for Vivi to pass through first. ]
ablazinggrace: (we are in your debt dion)

[personal profile] ablazinggrace 2025-06-26 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Seeing Dion relax puts Joshua more at ease, as well. He comes to understand something of what had the prince worried as the explanation comes, although it does surprise him to hear that Dion spoke to others about it and asked after him.]

A portal...how strange. I saw none, neither on Aphaia nor here. It feels almost like drifting through a dream, finding myself in one place and then another, the in-between but a hazy void.

[His eyes soften to hear the grim gravity of subtext here. He knows well the feeling of not knowing what has happened to someone, seeking answers and finding none for so long. Much longer, in Joshua's case, of course - it took years until he and the Undying were able to locate Clive among the Imperial branded - and yet, he knows how seriously the prince takes these things.

He reaches over to place one hand gently atop Dion's clasped ones, meeting his gaze.]

And yet, you persisted. Indefatigable as ever. You have my thanks for searching so ardently. But I am here now, and this time, you shall have no cause to worry over me. I will see to it, no matter what I must do.

[ Joshua's kindness impresses on Dion once more, just as it had when they were boys, just as it had when he learned of what Joshua endured trying to save him from himself. It isn't something he finds himself at all deserving of, yet he knows the futility of voicing such a thought. Still, something does bear saying.

He parts his hands, if only to catch Joshua's between them. For but a moment he allows himself to soak in the simple warmth of that touch, that confirmation that he is indeed here once again. That he remembers the last time was more than Dion could let himself hope for, when such things were entirely out of their influence. ]

I am given to worrying, but you are not responsible for that.

[ It is only natural to worry for someone he cares about. Someone he'd already mourned the loss of once before, even if years later that loss proved to be false. Joshua is here and whole. He could do no more than this and Dion would only be grateful. ]

Nor are you alone.

[ Perhaps Joshua doesn't need the reminder, yet it bears saying. Dion still owes him so much even now, and the thought that he might shoulder more burdens on his behalf naturally concerns him. ]

She's beginning to wonder if maybe she should have taken his hand anyway, so she doesn't wander off too far ahead.

Her eyes retain a faint hint of red from crying earlier, but she's smiling big now, delighted that one of the options has his approval. ]

Actually, I knew someone who would call me things like "little miss" or "young miss" too. [ Someone she was fond of—a little creature that was mostly interested in carrying out his job. But she still had some fun moments traveling together with him, up until things took a turn for the worst. Besides that, the only other "names" she's received are perhaps unkind titles that indicated her low class... ] No one's really given me any other name. [ Even though her eyes are still a bit red, it's good to see that she's smiling and laughing. Should he be worried she's going a little bit ahead? No. He thinks that he could close the distance quickly if something were to happen. Because even if she can take care of herself with the weapons and powers she has, why shouldn't she still be looked after?

He tips his chin up in mild greeting when they're back together. ]

That, so? Is it all right if I use it, then? [ He has a crooked smile but it is genuine. ] Well, Fio's a good name so I can understand not thinking of one better. [ A casual response about whether or not it is something to worry about. Whether they fail or succeed, tomorrow will still come. His eyes drift down. His tone initially is positive and flippant, but --

-- he blinks and looks back up. ]

To get a smoke? [ Another bobbing of his head. This is the problem when someone just dresses up like a bunny to pretend to work somewhere for shits and giggles -- not knowing where one can acquire any items. His eyes roll up as he looks around. Who's to say. ] This bunny sadly doesn't know.

[ Verso catches the movement out of the corner of his eye. He does almost stop playing until he sees she's dancing. It tugs at old memories that are and aren't his. This song is, perhaps, more than the two of them. Too many layers set upon each other to separate the "ownership" if there is any. (Perhaps, there is but the author is dead.)

The music ends. The notes hang peacefully (painfully) in the air as he slides his hands away from the keys. He flexes his fingers a few times before he rises from the seat. As he does, the piano vanishes before he would unceremoniously slam his knees into object.

He hasn't seen her in sixteen years. His head tilts away as he thinks that isn't quite true. There are remnants of her that he's attempted to speak to, but those remnants don't desire to speak to him. Not that he can blame them.

His head tilts toward the floor before he sets to walk towards her. He wonders how Renoir would feel if he saw Clea. The complicated feelings he has remain as they are, but he supposes he did cruel things to her (their? no, not their) sister. Not that she ever knew how calculated his machinations were, but either way, it doesn't change what he'd done. ]

[They stole him from his wife. One moment he had been drinking in the library after gathering with his family in the shadow of the monolith, then he had fallen asleep in his chair, and awoken to discover strangers had scratched him out of his world and pasted him to a foreign canvas. Whoever is responsible had separated him from a woman who is constantly unsettled, beholden to a storm of moods. Desperate in one moment, haunted in the next. Then in the rarest of moments she is happy and her mind seems whole.

He finishes his shot and stands with his fingers clawed around the glass. His demeanour reflects the thunderous mood that is tearing her apart; when he thinks he is no longer there to weather that storm on her behalf his lips curl and he looks like he wants to throw the glass across the room. They disrespected her.

But this is reality. He must accept it. The fact she is far away does not mean they will never meet again. So he endeavours to protect her from afar. He questions what she longs for in this situation, considers what the man below the monolith has failed to accomplish, and decides to give her everything she needs.

He sighs in exasperation, sets his glass upon a nearby table, then strides across the room using his cane as support. She would want her family safe. This woman has hurt his loved ones in ways one can never forgive, but to Aline she is a daughter, a member of the same house as his own.]

You are going to embarrass yourself.

I suppose all great men are be idolized in one way or another. [ But somehow, it doesn't quite sound like idolization from Clive. It sounds like curiosity to know what was left out and to know someone that others have simply built up to be a legend. Someone that wants to see the truth with his own eyes? ] Are you sure you wouldn't be disappointed if he turned out to be not as you thought?

He catches how Clive watches him and is careful about what he shows, but still -- he lets little truths slip through his expression. Like how difficult it is to talk about his immortality. He's lucky, though. People usually ask "the wrong questions," so never touch on why his immortality is so difficult for him.
