Rose resists the urge--heroically, in her expert opinion--to point out that clowns dance. Similarly, she avoids asking whether Fabian merely capers, or if he also jigs. She also avoids showing off her knowledge that the original bards were reciters of epics, an effort so herculean on her part that someone should write an epic about her.

No, the time for fucking around is done, if only because Fabian's shouting is drawing attention toward Rose, which is the exact opposite of what they're theoretically trying to accomplish here. Rose will privately admit that she was expecting something more musical--she's not really equipped to provide accompaniment for Fabian if that's what he needs. Unless he's going to do something more interpretive...

(Not that there would be anything wrong with that, Rose reminds herself. It was "cool" for kids of her generation to make fun of interpretive dance for being what later generations would refer to as "cringe." Part of being an adult is recognizing that not everyone's form of artistic expression is going to fit your rules or expectations, and in fact a judgmental audience is likely covering up their own insecurities about free expression by exercising the conformist power of the collective. Rose may enjoy tormenting Fabian a bit about the nature of Bards, but she wouldn't be so uncouth as to disdain his chosen form of artistry. Rose has mad couth, in point of fact.)

"You dance?" Rose asks as if she's never heard of such a thing. Then, somewhat suppressing a smug smile, she gestures around at the audience Fabian has now drawn. "I guess you'll have to prove it."
